The sea doesn't follow the plan

The boat drifts off, goes quiet, reaches a shore — don't jump to conclusions. Like a sea detective, sort every clue into three boxes first.

What we saw
What might explain it
What's still missing
Concept sketch · not measured · not a forecast 1強風改了航線Wind bends the route 2沒有新消息No new messages 3靠岸或受傷Shore or damage

Toggle the layers to compare, then tap red buoys 1, 2, 3 to open three sea mysteries.

When something odd happens, sort it first:
what we saw, what it might be, what's missing.

There's no single right answer here. A good inference writes down "we don't know yet" honestly.

1/3Sea mystery 1 of 3

A strong wind bends the route

CLUE 1 · WHAT WE SAW

The string of positions didn't follow the planned line — it slowly curved away.

CLUE 2 · WHAT MIGHT EXPLAIN IT

A strong wind blew while currents pushed too. To see which mattered more, compare the positions with wind and current data from the same hours.

CLUE 3 · WHAT'S MISSING

Speed worked out between two points is movement over ground — wind, waves, current and hull all together. Boat speed is not current speed.

Concept sketch · not measured — arrow lengths are only a metaphor

The wind starts pushing; the combined move drifts away from the current.

The current arrow never changes. Reading only the red line as "the current flowed back" would be a wrong guess.

Taiwan #1REAL CASE · TAIWAN #1

Pushed back by the north wind

On its 2018 first voyage, strong north winds pushed Taiwan #1 back into the Taiwan Strait, and no messages arrived for two days. Only an inspection after recovery confirmed a broken keel. The team repaired it and launched again.

Try it: slide the wind push to max and watch the combined move curl back. A bent track doesn't prove the current changed direction.

Note: the keel damage was known only after inspection on land — positions alone at sea could not confirm it.

No news only means nothing arrived

CLUE 1 · WHAT WE SAW

After a certain day, no new position came in.

CLUE 2 · WHAT MIGHT EXPLAIN IT

Low battery, patchy signal, a damaged antenna, broken equipment — all possible. Open each card on the right.

CLUE 3 · WHAT'S MISSING

Without telemetry (like voltage or signal logs), we can't tell which. And it is no reason to decide it sank.

Possible causes · open to see what data would tell them apart

電量低Low battery

Cloudy days may leave solar charging short. To check: voltage in the last few reports.

Patchy communication

In big waves or when tilted, signals may fail to get out. To check: was it patchy before, too?

Damaged antenna

Knocks or long sun exposure could do it. To check: usually only by inspecting it after recovery.

Water in the electronics, or breakage

Possible if a seal fails. To check: again, opening it up after recovery.

Some causes can only be known by getting the boat back and checking by hand.

Rye RiptidesREAL CASE · RYE RIPTIDES

Silent four months, then a signal from Norway

After 30 Sep 2021, no new position came for about four months. On 30 Jan 2022 it reported again — from Norway. A local family found it on 1 Feb; on 2 Feb it was brought to a school. Why it went quiet, we won't guess.

Try it: tap each box on the timeline and tell "reported", "found" and "brought to school" apart.

Reported a position", "was found" and "came ashore" are three different things — not necessarily on the same day.

Close to shore, or the boat got hurt

CLUE 1 · WHAT WE SAW

The newest point sits right next to land.

CLUE 2 · WHAT MIGHT EXPLAIN IT

It may be aground — or just drifting past, or the fix may be off. One point doesn't automatically mean "ashore".

CLUE 3 · WHAT'S MISSING

Do several points in a row stay put? Any photos? Did anyone local see it and report?

REAL CASES · AFTER RECOVERY

Only in your hands can you see clearly

Try it: enlarge the photo and look for wear and growth on the hull. What can a photo show? What needs measuring or opening up?

Below are possible effects — not all happened to these two boats, and no odds are given.

波浪Waves

Big waves roll and slam a boat, and near shore can push it onto sand or rock.

風與流Wind and current

Wind pushes hull and sail; current moves the whole water. When they disagree, the boat takes an unexpected path.

Hull, mast or keel damage

The keel keeps a boat steady and on course; damaged, it may be blown about more. Taiwan #1's broken keel was confirmed only by inspection after recovery.

Attached sea life

Barnacles and algae add weight and drag — and are one clue to how long a boat has been at sea.

If you find a miniboat on a shore: ask a teacher or the project team to contact the right local people. Don't go into the water or retrieve it alone.

Back on shore

Fixing it and sending it out again is part of the research too.

A broken keel teaches how to inspect and repair. A boat resting on a far shore is a reason to write to students there and ask what they saw. A voyage that went off-plan doesn't need to be rewritten as a success story — it is honest data in itself.
