Little boats, bring the sea home

Two uncrewed science miniboats, still being prepared. Tap a part to see how it works — your first touch gently opens the sound of the sea.

Explore real boats, student stories and the parts inside. (在新分頁開啟探索站)(opens the Station in a new tab)
Kuroshio? 水往哪裡去? wind FROM? water goes TO? Boat 1? Boat 2? names not supplied GPS faces the sky! Illustration: parts drawn from the standard kit — not confirmed specs of these boats

← 左右拖動工作台,找到第二艘 →← drag the bench sideways to find Boat 2 →

Tap any part. Each one tells you just one thing. These come from Educational Passages’ standard kit and optional sensor pack — what these two boats will actually carry is not yet confirmed.

GPS: looking up for satellites

GPS receives signals from navigation satellites and calculates “where am I, what time is it”. Sending that record home needs a separate communication link — the actual link on these two boats is unconfirmed. Tracks are made of these points.

Standard kit includes solar GPS · actual equipment for these boats: unconfirmed

Solar panel: saving daylight

Solar electricity charges a battery that runs the boat through nights and cloudy spells. Low power MAY affect reports, but a gap in a track can’t be diagnosed as a power problem. The exact battery and telemetry behaviour of these two boats is unconfirmed.

Standard kit · actual equipment for these boats: unconfirmed

Keel: the roly-poly’s foot

Waves knock the boat over; the heavy keel pulls it upright again. On the real precedent Taiwan #1, the keel was broken when it was recovered after its first launch — it sailed again after repairs.

Standard kit · actual design for these boats: unconfirmed

Temperature: measuring “this spot”

The optional sensor pack measures water and air temperature at the boat’s spot. Satellite retrievals and model gridded values represent different spatial scales, times and sometimes depths; comparing them requires matching, and they can’t be presumed equal.

Optional sensor pack (also secondary GPS, orientation, camera) · fitted on these boats: unconfirmed

Boat 1 (provisional)

The coral whale sail is illustrative only, not documented decoration of the actual boat. Official names were not supplied to this page, so here it’s provisionally “Boat 1”.

Boat 2 (provisional)

The yellow star sail is illustrative only, not documented decoration of the actual boat. Official names were not supplied to this page, so it’s provisionally “Boat 2” — in the illustrative voyage the two leave together, then go their own ways.

Act 2 · From hands to water

The moment you let go

You can let go, but you can’t steer. These boats have no motor; once at sea, the wind and currents choose the way.

Two pairs of hands are still holding them.

The sea where we set out Meet the north coast and the Kuroshio; read wind, currents and waves separately. (在新分頁開啟探索站)(opens the Station in a new tab)

Act 3 · Sent back from the sea

Messages from the sea

Each message is one illustrative fix (synthetic, not measured): which boat, what time (UTC), where, and how good the data is. Between messages the boat keeps moving — we just can’t see it.

第一艘 · 最後已知 32.55°N 138.22°E(演示)Boat 1 · last known 32.55°N 138.22°E (illustrative)
第二艘 · 最後已知 23.24°N 118.38°E(演示)Boat 2 · last known 23.24°N 118.38°E (illustrative)

Act 4 · Pause and wonder

One question at a time

Pick a question and the chart takes you to the right time, place and layer. Answers only go as far as the evidence does.

Distance of each boat from the illustrative release point (km) · derived from reported fixes · illustrative data

Wind is named for where it comes FROM: a northeast wind blows from the NE toward the SW. The arrow shows where it’s going. Currents are named for where they go TO: a northeastward current carries water toward the NE.
Taiwan #1Open the real precedent: Taiwan #1

This is a different, real boat — not one of the two on this page.

First launched 22 April 2018. North winds carried it toward the Taiwan Strait; it was recovered with a broken keel, then repaired.
Second voyage: 29 June – 20 October 2019 — 113 days, 5,428 km.
We don’t have its raw track data, so its route is not drawn here.

Evidence, sources & honesty notes

What data is this? Everything is an “illustrative voyage” generated by fixed rules in this page. No real telemetry, no verified API. The 2026 dates keep the timeline coherent — they are not observations.

Four kinds, kept apart: illustrative positions and temperatures (synthetic, not measurements) · derived (mean ground displacement speed between two consecutive fixes — not instantaneous or ocean-current speed) · model context (wind, current, waves, model SST — illustrative) · forecast (none on this page).

How could real data connect? Educational Passages’ Path Analysis Tool overlays wind, waves, currents and temperature on tracks, and its point popups separate reported position/time, speed calculated from consecutive fixes, and model estimates — this page follows that split. Copernicus Marine provides ocean environment products; Google Earth is a presentation option; Google Earth Engine and Microsoft Planetary Computer are data/analysis infrastructure options. None are connected, and none are partners.

ODAC is an Ocean Panel action group driven by HUB Ocean and Microsoft for shared ocean data — this is not evidence these boats are connected to it. Hon Hai: a proposed sustainability supporting partner per the supplied draft, unconfirmed; no logo or endorsement is implied.

Act 5 · Your turn to predict

Where will it report three days from now?

The chart stops at one moment and hides what comes next. Read the wind and currents, tap your guess, then play the illustrative voyage to compare.

Measured to the end of the illustrative timeline (2026-11-02 06:00 UTC) · illustrative data

Silence isn’t an ending. It could be power, weather, the antenna’s angle — or something really went wrong. We don’t know; that’s what exploring is. Where will the next message come from?

The real story hasn’t begun: according to the user-provided project draft, the planned release date is 19 October 2026 (not independently verified). So far, no real reports are connected to this page.

The sea doesn’t follow the plan Drifting off course, going silent, washing ashore: look at the clues before judging. (在新分頁開啟探索站)(opens the Station in a new tab)
