How does a little sailboat get to know the sea?
It has no motor, and no one steers it from afar. Just a sail, a keel, and a small box that reports where it is — and then it hands itself to the wind and the sea. This little book isn't selling a boat. It's here to keep you asking questions.
The 19 October 2026 event is still ahead — this is the time to get ready. How big is it, really?
About 1.5 metres — roughly a person's arm span
Most people's first reaction is: "That small — and it goes to sea?" It's far bigger than a toy, far smaller than a real ship. Because it's small, light and engine-free, it honestly follows the wind and sea — and shows us what's happening out there.
Want the real scale? Scroll to Lancer's story — two students sit right beside the boat in the photo.
If we cut it open, what's inside?
Tap the hull to meet each part
帆Sail 受風的那一面the side that catches wind
The sail catches the wind and turns its push into forward motion. There's no motor — wind is its most direct source of movement on the surface.
Wind blows east, current flows north — where does the boat go?
Guess first, then look: when wind and current push together
Set the wind and current, choose your guess, then press “Show the sketch”. It's a small model to help you think — not the real ocean.
Your guess: the boat will mostly…
Concept only — not measured or forecast. Arrow length only means “stronger or weaker”. Real boat speed isn't equal to current speed — waves, sea state and the boat itself all matter. This isn't navigation, and nobody steers the boat with it.
Same start — why different paths?
Lancer · Waterford High SchoolPast student case · Lancer · Waterford High School
A sailboat and a drifter, released into the sea together
In 2016, student Kaitlyn Dow wanted to understand what wind and currents each do. Instead of launching just a boat, she released a sailboat and a drifter together — one with a sail the wind can push, one riding closer to the water. Their tracks came out different.
The story didn't end at sea. The boat was later found in Ireland by a girl named Méabh, who got in touch with the students; after a community repair, Lancer was launched again. One small boat linked people in two places.
Sailboat and drifter released together
Their tracks diverge
Found in Ireland by Méabh, who connects with the students
Community repair, launched again
They left together. Why did they take different paths?
Tick the reasons you think are possible (choose any):
It's in the middle of the ocean — how do we know where?
Knowing where it is” and “sending word home” are two different jobs
The device “listens” to GPS satellites and works out its latitude and longitude. This step only receives — nothing is sent.
Send: messaging
A separate step sends the time, position and other data via a communications satellite to a platform on shore, where students read it.
What if no new message arrives for a while? It only means “no message received yet”. Power, weather, antenna angle or connectivity could all play a part — it doesn't mean the boat has sunk.
Open a sample message from sea
Read it: it tells you “when” and “where” — plus water temperature if that sensor is fitted. It doesn't tell you why the boat is there. That's for you to work out by comparing wind, currents and other data, then forming your own guess.
Back on shore — is that failure?
Past student case · Taiwan #1 · Xindian Senior High School
The wind sent it back — and it set out again
Students at Xindian painted the hull, wrote postcards, and sent it on its first voyage in 2018. A strong north wind pushed it back into the Taiwan Strait, and the boat was recovered. On inspection they found the keel was damaged — the underwater part from the cutaway that keeps the boat upright.
They repaired it and launched again. Its second voyage, in 2019, is officially recorded at 113 days and 5,428 km.
Students paint the hull and write postcards
First voyage meets a strong north wind, returns to the Taiwan Strait
Recovered and inspected: keel damage found and repaired
Sets out again: 113 days, 5,428 km
Taiwan #1 is a past case from 2018 onward — not the two 2026 boats from Keelung and Wanfang.
Back on shore — is that failure?
Check the gear
Only because it came back could they look closely: what broke, and why? That's evidence you can't get at sea.
修復Repair
Strengthen the keel and turn a finding into an improvement. Science is often: try, break, fix, try again.
The next question
The first try revealed the north wind's force; the second set out with a new question: where will it go this time?
Does every boat carry the same gear?

Is what the boat measures the same as what the map shows?
Keep the boat's observations apart from layers added later
Observed on the boat
Time and position; plus water or air temperature if those sensors are fitted. Each reading belongs to one spot, one moment, near the surface.
Added satellite / model layers
Wind, currents and waves from other organisations' satellites or numerical models. Their timescales, depths and resolution differ from the boat's — always say where each layer comes from.
A standard boat doesn't directly measure these:
These are great topics — they just need other data sources, not the boat's readings.
What do students do along the way?
You're not just watching a boat — you're on a research journey too
Check the gear and make sure messages come through.
Read each message: when, where, what values.
