A story about light, letters & Alaska

Another Time

Michio Hoshino ·

Right now, while you sit in this room…

…somewhere in Alaska, a bear is leaping into a river.

Tokyo · around 1971

A 19-year-old finds one photograph in a secondhand bookstore.

A tiny village at the edge of the Arctic: Shishmaref.

To the Mayor —

He knew no one there. So he wrote a letter to whoever was in charge.

Months later, a reply arrived: You can come.

He went. And he kept going back — caribou, grizzlies, aurora, friends.

Look at the two clocks

What is happening in your other time — right now?

Hold the last frame

The final scene stays on screen with both clocks ticking. Let the students read the time in Alaska, then ask them to imagine one thing happening there at this exact minute.

A question to carry

Hoshino found his whole life through one photo and one letter. Ask: what small thing could you write to — with no name, just hope?
