In Gamilaraay knowledge, Gawarrgay the emu is not drawn between bright stars. Gawarrgay is perceived in the dark dust lanes of the Milky Way: the head in the Coalsack, the dark patch beside the Southern Cross, with the neck and body reaching along the dust across the southern sky.

Karlie Alinta Noon is a Gamilaraay astronomer and astrophysicist at the Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. She holds this knowledge as a Gamilaraay woman and works with it as a researcher, and it is her narration and teaching that carry the account of Gawarrgay to a reader who is not on Gamilaraay Country — including you, on this screen, now. Around April, Gawarrgay stands in the sky as a running bird with its neck stretched forward. On Country, dhinawan — emus — are breeding and laying, and this is the time when eggs are gathered.

By the end of June the posture has changed. Gawarrgay sits low, the way an emu sits on a nest. Chicks are forming inside the eggs, and eggs are no longer taken. It is the male dhinawan who sits and incubates them, and the figure overhead carries that teaching about fatherhood and responsibility.

The dark that blocks the light 遮住光的黑暗

Astronomers describe the Coalsack as a dark molecular cloud roughly 600 light-years away. Its dust absorbs and scatters visible light, so the star clouds behind it never reach the camera at these wavelengths. The dark patch is blocked light. See ESO's image page “Coalsack, Emu, Tinamou?”.

That is a statement about dust, distance and wavelength, and it stops there. It does not explain the Gamilaraay account, does not validate it, and is not in competition with it. A measurement of extinction cannot tell anyone when chicks are forming or when eggs should be left alone. Gawarrgay does that work, in Gamilaraay hands, on Gamilaraay Country.
