It has been flying quietly for a long time
It is smaller than a pea and weighs less than a gram. It makes no sound and no heat. It turns slowly in vacuum and now and then throws back a little sunlight, a flash almost too faint to register.
It came off comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle — a nucleus 26 kilometres across, the largest known object that crosses our orbit, back once every 133 years. The last return was 1992. The next is 2126.
Every pass leaves a line of debris behind it. Each July and August the Earth goes through that line.

It comes in at about 60 kilometres a second, sixty times the speed of a bullet. At this height the air is barely air. It is enough.

MISCONCEPTION 01 · WHY IT GLOWS
It is not friction
A meteor does not heat up by rubbing against the air. It is moving too fast for that. The air in front of it cannot get out of the way, so it is compressed, and the temperature climbs to several thousand degrees.
That compressed air is what glows. It also strips the grain away, layer by layer, into vapour.
The light is not the stone. It is the air in front of it that had no time to move.
THE LINE YOU ACTUALLY SEE
You are not seeing the grain
What you see is a channel of ionised air, burned open along its path. The grain itself has already come apart, well before you can blink.
It lasts a few tenths of a second. A blink is longer.
AFTERWARDS · NOTHING IS LEFT
It ends up in your breath
Almost all of these bodies vaporise completely. No meteorite, no crater, nothing to pick up. What remains is very fine dust, settling out of the upper air over months.
The Earth takes in tens of thousands of tonnes of it a year.
Some of it is in the air you are breathing.
MISCONCEPTION 02 · A HUNDRED AN HOUR
That number is theoretical
ZHR is the zenithal hourly rate. It assumes the radiant sits directly overhead, the sky carries no light pollution, and your eye reaches magnitude 6.5.
Those three things rarely hold together. From a city, a dozen in a night is a good night.

The paths are parallel
It is perspective. Parallel tracks converge on a point when you look along them, the way snow seems to stream out of one spot ahead of a windscreen.
There is no fountain up there. Every one of these lines is falling the same way.

A night with no moon
The date falls on a new moon, so there is no moonlight at all. The peak itself comes during daylight on the 13th, which leaves the nights of the 12th and the 13th as the two windows worth using.
