For years the roof existed as a feeling. Everyone could see the curves; nobody could build them. They were beautiful and they were unrelated — every rib a different rib, every rib demanding its own mould, its own scaffold, its own arithmetic. At that scale a building cannot be made of one-off pieces.
The sphere did not make the roof more beautiful. It made the roof repeatable.
223 entries arrived from 28 countries. The one chosen came from Jørn Utzon: a great stepped podium on the point, and above it a family of white sails. The podium and the steps were developed under his leadership and they hold the whole idea. The roof, at that moment, was a proposition rather than a system.
A curve on paper carries no instructions. It says nothing about how it is measured, cast, lifted, or repeated a thousand times in the rain.
Ove Arup & Partners took the roof apart and rebuilt it again and again — Jack Zunz and Michael Lewis leading, with engineers, mathematicians, model makers and draughtspeople working alongside Utzon's office. Arup's own account describes twelve trial schemes before the geometry was settled: parabolic and elliptical shells, ribbed variants, models tested and discarded.
Each failure said the same thing in a different accent. Related-looking curves are not a related system. If no two ribs are alike, then no two moulds are alike, and the site fills with formwork that can never be used twice.
The resolution was to stop treating the sails as free forms and take every one of them from spheres of a single curvature — spheres of approximately 75 metres in diameter, that is a radius of about 37.5 metres. Curvature then becomes constant. A rib taken from one sail can be the same component as a rib in another. Segments could be precast in a yard beside the building, from a small repeating family of moulds, and lifted into place.
That is the whole turn: one sphere → one curvature → repeated ribs → repeated formwork → prefabrication and assembly. Drawing, calculation, casting and erection were finally speaking the same language.
Afterwards came the skin: 1,056,006 ceramic tiles, developed with the makers and set into chevron-patterned precast lids, so that even the surface was a repeated part rather than a hand-finish.
In February 1966, after mounting political and administrative conflict with the new state government over payments, control and process, Jørn Utzon resigned and left Australia. He never returned to the site. He never saw the building finished.
What remained was not a nearly-complete house. The brief itself had changed; the interiors, the glass walls that close the shells against the harbour, the halls and their acoustics were unresolved. Peter Hall, with Lionel Todd and David Littlemore — Hall, Todd & Littlemore, working with the Government Architect's office — carried the building to completion under pressure and with hard trade-offs. The major hall became a dedicated Concert Hall and opera moved to the smaller theatre; stage machinery already installed was taken out; the plywood interiors, foyers and seating were designed anew.
It opened on 20 October 1973. Neither claim is true: that Utzon completed the building, or that Hall merely copied a finished design. Two different problems, two different phases, both of them real work.
From 1999 the Opera House re-engaged Utzon. He wrote the Utzon Design Principles (2002) as a guide for everyone who would touch the building afterwards; the Utzon Room opened in 2004 and the Western Foyer and Colonnade followed in 2006, worked through from Denmark with his son Jan and local architects. Utzon died in 2008, having never come back to see it. The care continues now with custodians, conservation architects and repair teams.
