It began with Microsoft Planetary Computer's HREA — High Resolution Energy Access — dataset. It was built to answer one question: where is there no electricity? But the question we ended up asking was different.

The most striking finding from HREA isn't how many people live without power. It's that many energy-poor communities are not far from an existing grid at all. Sometimes what's missing isn't a power plant — it's the last, smallest link.
