So what is it, exactly?
Eco-design means deciding a product’s whole environmental life while you can still change it — materials, energy, packaging, repair, and the last day — and treating those as design constraints, not a report you write afterwards.
The long version, plus the names it hides behind
You’ll meet the same idea wearing different jackets: ecodesign, design for environment (DfE), life-cycle design, circular design, cradle to cradle. They differ in emphasis, not in spirit.
Two anchors worth knowing. ISO 14006 is the international guidance for building eco-design into how an organisation actually works. And in Europe the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is turning durability, repairability and recycled content from a nice gesture into a legal minimum, with a Digital Product Passport attached.
The quiet punchline of the whole discipline: roughly the first 20% of design decisions lock in the large majority of a product’s lifetime environmental impact. After that you’re just apologising more efficiently.
Can it be fixed?
Screws or glue. Spare parts or none. A repair manual or a warranty void sticker. This is the fastest tell in the room.
Can it be taken apart?
Fewer materials, cleanly separable. If steel, foam and plastic are fused into one lump, nobody recycles it — whatever the logo says.
Can it come back?
Is there a route home — resale, refill, take-back, remanufacture? A loop that exists on paper only is not a loop.

A repair service and a second-hand shop, run by the brand that sold you the jacket.
What’s goodFree repair guides, paid repairs, trade-in and resale of used gear — plus advertising that openly asks you to buy less.
Why it worksIt changes the unit of value from “a sale” to “a garment’s lifetime”. A jacket worn nine years instead of three is roughly a third of the footprint per year of use.
The business bitResale keeps the brand in the conversation at a lower price point, which is how younger buyers get in. The repair queue is also the best product-failure database a company can own.

What’s goodScrews instead of glue, replaceable battery, screen and camera modules, spare parts sold openly, long software support.
Why it worksFor a phone, most of the carbon is spent before you switch it on — in mining and manufacture. Keeping one alive for five to seven years beats almost any recycling scheme.
The business bitIt sells a stance, not just a spec sheet, and earns margin on parts and modules instead of forcing an upgrade cycle. Proof that repairability is a product feature people will pay for.

The business bitA parts marketplace turns a one-off purchase into a decade-long relationship, and the repair community does a large share of the marketing for free.

The catch A shoe is still a glued mix of materials, so it can’t be recycled again. Recycled input is a start, not a loop — and this is exactly where you should get sceptical.

Ask them about the nearest object to you right now. A bottle, a chair, your headphones. It takes about two minutes and it never stops being useful.
Q1Where does it come from?
Count the materials. One material is a gift; six fused together is a landfill ticket. Ask what was mined, grown or drilled, how far it travelled, and whether a recycled or bio-based version does the same job.
Try this → name every material in the object out loud. If you run out of names before you run out of parts, that’s the design problem.
Q2What does it cost to run?
For anything that plugs in, heats, cools or gets washed, the use phase usually dwarfs manufacturing. A washing machine designed for cold cycles saves more than any clever packaging ever will.
Try this → ask where the energy or water goes over ten years, not ten minutes.
Q3Can a normal person fix it?
Look for standard screws, labelled parts, a battery you can reach, a manual that exists. Glue, proprietary bits and sealed shells are decisions — someone chose them, and they chose replacement over repair.
Try this → search the product name plus “teardown” on iFixit and read the repairability score before you buy.
Q4What happens on the last day?
Follow the object past the bin. Can it be resold, refilled, remanufactured, composted, or separated into clean streams? “Recyclable” means possible in theory. Ask instead: is it actually collected where I live?
Try this → design the last day first, then work backwards to the first sketch. Everything gets easier.
Q5Should it exist at all?
The uncomfortable one, and the most powerful. Sometimes the best eco-design is a service instead of an object, a shared one instead of fifty private ones, a repair instead of a launch, or a firm no.
Try this → ask what problem it solves, then ask what else already solves it.
Does it sell? Does it keep the business alive?
The honest answer is: yes, when it changes the economics — and no, when it’s a claim on a label. Here’s what the data actually shows.

Not from charging more for a green sticker. From four structural shifts:
- 01Cost out. Less material, less packaging, less freight, less energy. Interface and MUJI show that subtraction improves the margin before it improves the planet.
- 02Revenue after the sale. Parts, repairs, refills, resale, remanufacture. Framework and Patagonia earn for years from a single purchase.
- 03Retention. Repairs bring people back into the shop. Compatibility brings them back in a decade. Loyalty is cheaper than acquisition.
- 04Risk cover. Right-to-repair rules, plastic bans, the EU’s ESPR and product passports are arriving anyway. Designing for them early is insurance you get to sell.
Read the sceptical footnote before you quote any of this
Claims-based growth data shows correlation, not proof: better-funded, better-marketed brands make more claims. Treat the 28% versus 20% gap as a strong signal, not a physical law.
And watch the rebound effect — a product that’s cheaper to run often gets used more. Efficiency without sufficiency can quietly cancel itself out.
Greenwashing test: a real claim names a number, a boundary and a date. A vague one says “eco-friendly” and hopes you stop reading.
Eco-design pays when it changes how the company earns — not just how the product looks.
