01 · opening

Three seconds of pavement.

That's roughly what a pilot gets to read the surface before the wheels touch it — a shallow-angle glance, sometimes through rain, sometimes at night, at a mile a minute. Nothing on a runway is decorative. Every stripe, numeral and chevron is a sentence in a standard written twice — FAA AC 150/5340-1 in the United States, ICAO Annex 14 almost everywhere else — so that the same white paint means the same thing whether you're reading it outside Anchorage or Auckland.

A runway is not a surface. It is a text, sent to a reader moving at a mile a minute, at a shallow angle, in rain.

02 · the number

Designator = heading ÷ 10.

183° becomes 18. The two ends of a single strip of pavement differ by exactly 18 — reciprocal headings painted on the same asphalt, because a runway has two names depending on which way you're landing. Drag the compass. Watch both ends recompute as you turn.

03 · the pole that won't hold still

Why magnetic — and the drift underneath it.

The instrument in front of the pilot is a magnetic compass, so the number on the ground has to agree with it. That ties paint to the Earth's core. Declination is the angle between true north and magnetic north — and magnetic north isn't the geographic pole, and isn't fixed. It's the point where the field dips straight down, driven by convection in the liquid outer core, thousands of kilometres beneath the tarmac.

It crept across the Canadian Arctic for a century, then accelerated — from the 1990s, some 50 to 60 kilometres a year, heading for Siberia. So designators go stale. Airports grind the old numeral off, repaint the new one, and reissue every chart naming the old designation — Anchorage has done exactly this. The most permanent-looking thing we build carries a label with a shelf life.

04 · the markings

White means runway. Yellow means not for you.

Retroreflective glass beads are mixed into the paint, so headlights and landing lights throw back at the aircraft that made them — which is why any of this reads at night at all. Every mark below is measured from the approach end along the centreline, at a fixed distance, a fixed offset, and never overlapping another. Tap any mark.

Pairs at 500 / 1000 / 1500 / 2000 / 2500 ft, in groups of three, two, one — group size tells you how far down the runway you are.
Aiming point

Thicker, further outboard than touchdown-zone stripes so the two never collide. Where a 3° glideslope meets the pavement.
Centreline

Unbroken, at both pavement edges, marking where the usable surface ends.

The aiming point is the best of it — paint, the PAPI lights beside the runway, and the glideslope needle in the cockpit, three independent systems agreeing on one square of concrete.

A displaced threshold is paint doing conditional logic: pavement before the bar is good for takeoff roll and rollout, but not for touchdown. The arrows chase the bar because that's the instruction — go, don't land, until here.

05 · the descent

A mile out, sinking toward the numbers.

Keep scrolling. The viewpoint drops from a mile out to over the threshold to the nose-wheel touching down — the same marks, in the same order, at the same spacing set out above, foreshortening easing as the height falls away.

06 · closing

Design under duress, whose loudest glyph expires because the planet's core keeps moving.

Every runway on earth is a negotiation between a fixed piece of concrete and a magnetic field that refuses to sit still — repainted, regrit, reissued, and read, every time, in three seconds, at a mile a minute.
