One honest line first: “more cropland” is almost never the same question as “more food.” Africa needs far more food and has the largest yield gap on Earth — closing that gap is a land bank of the same order as clearing new frontier. Where yields stall and demand rises, expansion happens at the forest edge. That is the whole risk, in one sentence.

先说一句实话:“更多耕地”几乎从不等于“更多粮食”。非洲需要多得多的粮食,也拥有全球最大的单产缺口——把缺口补上,等于凭空得到一片“土地银行”。一旦单产停滞而需求上升,扩张就会发生在森林边缘。风险,就是这一句话。

Cerrado clearing now rivals or exceeds the Amazon’s in the PRODES record — and most “zero-deforestation” rules do not cover non-forest ecosystems. Gran Chaco (Argentina/Paraguay/Bolivia) the same.

Primary forest loss surged in 2024 — second-largest in the world, fire and agricultural expansion driven (GFW).
Commodity governance
The Amazon Soy Moratorium (since 2006) kept soy expansion on already-cleared land in the biome — the best-evidenced private land-use agreement in existence, and now politically contested.
Verdict — GOOD in the Amazon, ALERT in the savannas. The region proves deforestation is a policy choice, then proves the rules were written for the wrong biome.

Stable to shrinking; Europe is the one region where farmland has contracted since 2000. Its land footprint is now largely offshore — in imported soy, palm, cocoa and beef.
Organic
Around 10–11% of utilised agricultural area against the Farm to Fork target of 25% by 2030 — behind.
Nutrients & nature
Nitrogen surplus and farmland bird decline remain the failing indicators (EEA).
EUDR
The EU Deforestation Regulation makes seven commodities — cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soy, wood — illegal to place on the market without deforestation-free geolocation. Application dates and simplification have shifted repeatedly through 2025: verify current status at source.
Verdict — ON TRACK on domestic land, BEHIND on nutrients and biodiversity, and the decisive question is whether it enforces its own import rule.

Soil practice

High Plains / Ogallala aquifer depletion is a slow, well-documented drawdown of irrigated capacity.
Policy
Large climate-smart agriculture funding was legislated, then partially unwound and re-labelled through 2025 — programme continuity, not ambition, is the risk.
Verdict — BEHIND. Highest yields on Earth, thinnest adoption of the practices that keep them.

Woody vegetation clearing in Queensland, largely for pasture, remains the developed world’s most persistent land-clearing alert.
Fisheries
The Western and Central Pacific tuna fishery — the largest on Earth — has all four main stocks assessed as not overfished, managed through the Parties to the Nauru Agreement Vessel Day Scheme. Australia and New Zealand run among the most rigorous stock-assessment regimes anywhere.
Coming risk
Warming is projected to shift tuna biomass eastward out of Pacific island EEZs toward the high seas — a fiscal shock for states where licence fees fund the budget.
Verdict — GOOD at sea, ALERT on land. The Pacific holds the clearest working proof that a shared resource can be capped and still pay.

What actually counts as “sustainable”

Three words carry most of the policy weight in this field, and all three are used loosely. Below, each is pinned to something measurable — and to the places that measured it.

Sustainable agriculture可持续农业

Working definition 工作定义

Production that holds or raises output per hectare while lowering emissions, water use and nutrient loss per unit of food, keeps soil and pollinators intact, and leaves the farmer better off. The UN’s own indicator, SDG 2.4.1, tests exactly this across eleven sub-indicators — economic, environmental and social. A farm passes only if it is viable on all three.

The rice case, in detail. Flooded paddy is the clearest place to see what sustainability means in practice. Continuous flooding creates the airless conditions in which methane-producing microbes thrive; rice is responsible for roughly a tenth of global methane from human activity, and irrigated rice is one of the largest single users of fresh water on Earth.

  • Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) — let the field dry to a few centimetres below the surface, then re-flood. Field trials and IRRI syntheses report methane cuts commonly in the 30–70% range and water savings around a quarter, with yields held.干湿交替灌溉:让田面落干数厘米再复水。国际水稻研究所等的田间试验显示甲烷普遍下降约30–70%、节水约四分之一,而产量不降。

  • Straw management — the difference between incorporating wet straw and removing or composting it can swing a paddy’s methane budget more than the fertiliser choice does.秸秆管理:湿态还田与移出/堆肥之间的差别,对稻田甲烷的影响常常大于化肥选择。
  • Vietnam, 2024–2030 — one million hectares of low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta, with results-based finance attached. If it verifies, it becomes the template for all of monsoon Asia.越南 2024–2030:湄公河三角洲100万公顷低排放水稻,并挂钩成效付费融资。一旦核证成功,就是整个季风亚洲的样板。

The trap to name out loud. Sustainable intensification only protects forest if the extra yield actually substitutes for expansion. Where higher yields make frontier farming more profitable, they can pull the frontier outward instead. Yield policy without a land boundary — a moratorium, a protected area, a jurisdictional agreement — is only half a policy.

Sustainable fisheries可持续渔业

Working definition 工作定义

A fishery is sustainable when the stock is assessed by science, the catch limit is set by a rule agreed before the season rather than negotiated after it, the rule cuts catch automatically when biomass falls, bycatch and habitat damage are capped, and the whole thing is enforceable — observers, vessel tracking, port controls. Certification is evidence of this, not a substitute for it.

可持续渔业意味着:种群有科学评估;捕捞上限依照事先约定的规则设定,而不是事后谈判;生物量下降时规则自动减产;兼捕与生境破坏设限;并且可执行——观察员、船位监控、港口措施。认证是这一切的证据,而不是替代品。

  • Where it works. The Pacific Vessel Day Scheme (PNA) — a hard cap on fishing days traded between island states, with all four main tuna stocks assessed as not overfished. US rebuilding plans under Magnuson-Stevens. Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Iceland.   • Where it does not. The Mediterranean and Black Sea, where roughly six in ten assessed stocks remain overfished — though that is down from nearly nine in ten a decade earlier, which is real progress. West African waters, where distant-water fleets and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing outpace monitoring capacity.未奏效之地:地中海与黑海约六成被评估种群仍过度捕捞——但比十年前的近九成已明显改善;西非海域则是远洋船队与非法、未报告、不受管制捕捞超出监测能力。
  • The structural shift. Aquaculture overtook capture fisheries for aquatic animal food for the first time in 2022 (about 94 Mt).   • Two rules that just arrived. The WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies entered into force in September 2025, disciplining subsidies to IUU and overfished-stock fishing. The High Seas (BBNJ) Agreement reached its sixtieth ratification and enters into force in January 2026 — the first framework for protected areas beyond national jurisdiction.两条刚落地的规则:世贸组织《渔业补贴协定》于2025年9月生效,约束对非法捕捞与过度捕捞种群的补贴;《公海生物多样性(BBNJ)协定》获第60份批准,将于2026年1月生效——国家管辖范围以外首个海洋保护区框架。

Sustainable commodities可持续大宗产品

Working definition 工作定义

A “bulk” or soft commodity is an agricultural good traded as a fungible grade rather than a brand: grains and oilseeds (wheat, maize, rice, soy), palm oil, sugar, coffee, cocoa, cotton, rubber, beef, pulp and paper. Because the goods are interchangeable, responsibility dissolves at the point of blending — which is exactly where governance has to bite. Sustainable means: known origin to the plot, no conversion of natural ecosystems after a fixed cut-off date, no forced or child labour, and a price that survives the first bad harvest.

How you actually manage the trade — four levers, in order of proven effect:

  • Jurisdictional and sector-wide agreements. The Amazon Soy Moratorium worked because it applied to a whole biome and to every major buyer at once, so there was no leakage market. Certification of individual farms never achieved that.属地与全行业协议:亚马逊大豆禁伐协议之所以有效,是因为它同时覆盖整个生物群区与所有主要买家,没有“漏出市场”。逐个农场的认证从未做到这一点。
  • Traceability infrastructure. Geolocation to the plot plus open supply-chain mapping (Trase) turns a diffuse claim into an auditable one.可追溯基础设施:地块级坐标加上公开的供应链映射(Trase),把模糊承诺变成可审计事实。
  • Import-market law. The EUDR is the first attempt to make deforestation a customs matter rather than a corporate pledge. Its credibility now rests entirely on enforcement.进口市场立法:EUDR 首次把毁林从企业承诺变成海关事务,其公信力全部押在执法上。
  • Price and finance. Cocoa is the warning: Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire supply the large majority of world cocoa, prices spiked past historic records in 2024, and the farmers taking the deforestation decision were the last to see the money. I vote for Reading B as the lever — and Reading A as the truth.

Reading A is where the trees fall. Reading C is what is lost when they do. But if the goal is leverage per unit of effort, five trading houses sit between millions of producers and billions of eaters: they already hold the geolocation data that any deforestation rule requires, and a purchasing standard applied by five buyers at once behaves like law. So: A tells us what to measure, B tells us where to push, C tells us why it matters. Publish the plot-level sourcing maps, and two of the three questions become answerable in public.

The instruction was: if something you read can be re-thought and linked to the real world in a positive direction, vote for it. These four are not hopes. They are measured, replicable, and currently under-copied.

Vote 01 · Replicate

Alternate Wetting and Drying, at national scale

The rare intervention that cuts methane, cuts water, cuts pumping cost and holds yield. Vietnam is proving it at a million hectares. Every monsoon rice nation should be running the same programme with the same measurement.

干湿交替灌溉,做到全国规模:同时降甲烷、降耗水、降抽水成本,且产量不减。越南正以百万公顷验证。每一个季风稻作国家都该以同一套测量方法照做。

Vote 02 · Export the model

The Pacific Vessel Day Scheme

Small states pooled sovereignty, capped a shared resource in days rather than tonnes, and made the cap pay. It is the strongest existing proof that a commons can be governed by its weakest holders. Apply the logic to the high seas from 2026.

太平洋“捕鱼日方案”:小国合并主权,以“天数”而非“吨数”为共享资源设限,并让上限本身产生收益。这是“公共资源可由最弱势持有者治理”的最强实证。2026年起,把同一逻辑用到公海。

Close Africa’s yield gap before opening its frontier

Soil testing, balanced fertiliser, seed, storage and roads. The land saved by lifting cereal yields from 1.6 to 3 t/ha is measured in tens of millions of hectares of forest and savanna not cleared. Fund the gap, not the frontier.

先补非洲单产缺口,再谈开垦前沿:土壤测试、平衡施肥、良种、仓储与道路。把谷物单产从1.6提到3吨/公顷所“省下”的土地,以数千万公顷未被开垦的森林与稀树草原来计量。要资助缺口,而不是前沿。

The single highest-return unwritten rule in global land use. The mechanism already exists and is already proven one biome to the north; the savanna is simply not covered by it. Cover it.

Two deadlines collide

The Glasgow pledge to halt deforestation by 2030 (assessments put the world well off the required trajectory), and the 30×30 target for protected land and ocean. Both fall due while cropland demand is still rising.

WRI’s food-future analysis puts the 2010–2050 calorie gap near 56%, and the land gap under business-as-usual at roughly 593 Mha — an area about twice the size of India. Every point of yield growth is a subtraction from that number.

People

The centre of gravity moves south

About 9.7 bn people by 2050 and a peak near 10.3 bn in the 2080s. Africa carries most of the remaining growth, while East Asia and Europe age and shrink — two opposite food-system problems on one planet.
