Earth Watching and Landing

Observation de la Terre & atterrissage

We pick a region, drop altitude, and read ten systems at once — carbon, water, energy, waste, materials, population, nature, AI, agriculture, industry. Not a score. Not an investment case. A shared way of seeing, with every claim tied to a source you can open yourself.

“The earth is a living system. Say hi — understanding is the focus that finds the big opportunity, as one earth.”

How a landing works

La méthode d'atterrissage

What it is

A repeatable altitude change: satellite-level big picture first, then one dive per system, then the links that let anyone re-check us.

What it is not

No ranking, no rating, no “winner”. Countries are not comparable trophies; they are different physics, different water, different debt to their own soil.

Why it repeats

We land more than once. Between visits the planet moved, so the benchmark is really a calibration — of the data and of us.

48.02° N, 66.92° E≈2.72 M km²≈20 M peopleCarbon neutrality pledge: 2060
Energy能源 · Énergiebehind

Coal still supplies roughly two-thirds of electricity; wind and solar are only a few percent of generation against a 15%-renewables-by-2030 goal. Auction pipeline exists; grid flexibility and inland gas shortage are the real bottlenecks.

Carbon碳 · Carbonebehind

One of the highest emissions intensities per unit of GDP in the world, with large methane leakage from oil, gas and coal mining. Neutrality by 2060 requires the power fleet decision to be taken in this decade, not the next.

Water水 · Eaubehind

Around half of surface water arrives from upstream neighbours (Ili, Syr Darya, Ural). Irrigation losses are heavy, the Aral basin is the world's teaching case, and glacier-fed inflow declines after 2040 in most scenarios.

Waste废弃物 · Déchetswatch

Municipal recycling is climbing from a very low base; the bigger mass is legacy industrial and mining tailings distributed across the steppe.

Materials材料 · Matériauxstrength

The world's largest uranium producer, plus chromium, copper and a serious critical-minerals inventory. The open question is whether processing and refining stay in-country.

Population人口 · Populationstrength

Young and still growing while most benchmark peers age — a demographic window that closes only around mid-century.

Nature自然 · Natureon track

Steppe protection has produced one of the largest wildlife recoveries anywhere on earth (see below). Rangeland carbon and degraded-pasture restoration remain under-measured.

AI empowerAI 赋能 · IAwatch

A genuinely strong digital-government base to build on. Almost none of it yet points at grid dispatch, irrigation scheduling or methane detection.

Agriculture农业 · Agriculturewatch

A top-ten global wheat exporter on mostly rainfed steppe — which makes it a food-security node for Central Asia and a drought-exposed one.

Industry工业 · Industriebehind

Revenue concentrated in oil (Tengiz, Kashagan) and metals. Flaring, gas processing capacity and refinery upgrades decide the near-term emissions curve.

Not on my map before

Saiga antelope in Kazakhstan fell to roughly 20,000 animals in the early 2000s and have since recovered past 2.8 million — one of the largest mammal comebacks ever recorded. — reported by the government of Kazakhstan / conservation monitoring (see IUCN Red List)

Read · EN

Kazakhstan is the landing where energy and water are the same question. A coal-heavy grid meets a river system it does not control, in a country whose mineral endowment makes it structurally important to everyone else's transition. The near-term test is unglamorous: gas processing, grid flexibility, irrigation metering.

Lecture · FR

Landing 02 · Western Europe

Germany

德国 Allemagne · Deutschland
51.17° N, 10.45° E≈357,600 km²≈83 M peopleClimate neutrality target: 2045
Energy能源 · Énergieon track

Renewables now supply around 60% of public electricity generation — a share almost nobody projected a decade ago. Nuclear exit completed 2023; coal exit legally 2038, politically earlier.

Carbon碳 · Carbonewatch

Roughly 45–50% below 1990 already, but the 2030 target of −65% depends on the two sectors that keep missing: buildings and transport. Power did the work; heat and mobility have not.

Water水 · Eauwatch

A country that assumed water abundance is writing a National Water Strategy: repeated Rhine low-water episodes, falling groundwater in the east, forest drought damage.

Waste废弃物 · Déchetson track

Among the highest municipal recycling rates in the world — while also generating one of the higher volumes of waste per person. Both facts are true at once.

Materials材料 · Matériauxwatch

A circular-economy strategy exists on paper; import dependence for critical raw materials is the exposed nerve of an export-manufacturing economy.

Population人口 · Populationbehind

Ageing fast; population grows only through migration. Skilled-labour shortage is now a decarbonisation constraint — heat pumps and grids need installers, not just subsidies.

Nature自然 · Naturebehind

Most protected habitats are still assessed in unfavourable condition, and drained peatlands quietly emit a large share of national greenhouse gases from a small share of land.

AI empowerAI 赋能 · IAwatch

World-class industrial and research AI; slow rollout of the boring digital plumbing (smart meters, grid data, permitting workflows) that AI would actually act on.

Agriculture农业 · Agriculturebehind

Nitrogen surplus and groundwater nitrate remain unresolved; organic farming sits near 11–12% of farmland against a 30%-by-2030 ambition.

Industry工业 · Industriewatch

The most watchable industrial experiment on the planet: hydrogen-ready direct-reduced-iron steel, electrified chemistry, against high energy prices and relocation risk.

Not on my map before

Drained peatlands cover only a small percentage of Germany's land yet account for roughly 7% of its total greenhouse-gas emissions — rewetting is one of the cheapest tonnes available, and one of the slowest to move. — Umweltbundesamt

Read · EN

Germany proves a power system can be rebuilt inside twenty years and that this is the easier half. The next decade is not about generation at all; it is heat, freight, steel, soil and water — slower, less visible, politically harder, and the true measure of the Energiewende.

Lecture · FR

Landing 03 · North America

United States

美国 États-Unis
37.09° N, 95.71° W≈9.83 M km²≈340 M peopleStated 2030 target: −50/52% vs 2005
Energy能源 · Énergieon track

Solar plus batteries now dominate new capacity additions, and storage has gone from pilot to backbone in the space of four years. Renewables are roughly a quarter of generation; gas is still the largest single source.

Carbon碳 · Carbonebehind

Emissions are down meaningfully from 2005 but not on the pace the 2030 pledge requires, and federal policy direction changes faster than infrastructure can. States and utilities are the more reliable signal.

Water水 · Eaubehind

The Colorado River is allocated beyond what it delivers, and the Ogallala aquifer is being spent, not managed. Water is the West's binding constraint on everything else — including data centres.

Waste废弃物 · Déchetsbehind

Around a third of municipal solid waste is recycled or composted, on one of the world's highest per-person generation rates.

Materials材料 · Matériauxwatch

Heavy import reliance for many critical minerals alongside a fast build-out of battery, magnet and refining capacity. Whether recycling scales with it is the 2030s question.

Population人口 · Populationwatch

Still growing, almost entirely through migration; fertility below replacement. Growth is also moving toward the hottest and most water-stressed states.

Nature自然 · Naturewatch

A shifted wildfire regime is now a carbon and air-quality actor in its own right; conservation targets exist, land-use pressure is the counterweight.

AI empowerAI 赋能 · IAwatch

Global leader in compute — and therefore the first country where AI is a visible load on the power system. Data centres were about 4% of US electricity in 2023, with credible projections toward roughly 7–12% by 2028.

Agriculture农业 · Agriculturewatch

The most instrumented farmland on earth, still irrigating from declining aquifers. Precision agriculture and livestock methane are where the leverage sits.

Industry工业 · Industriewatch

An unusual manufacturing investment wave — batteries, chips, clean hydrogen hubs — with industrial process heat still barely started.

Not on my map before

Roughly 2.6 terawatts of generation and storage sit waiting in US interconnection queues — more than the entire installed capacity of the country. The bottleneck is no longer technology or money; it is paperwork and wire. — Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory queue tracking

Read · EN

The US landing is a study in speed without sequence: enormous deployment, a queue that cannot clear it, and a new electricity consumer — AI compute — arriving before the grid was finished. Watch transmission, interconnection reform, and water in the Southwest. They decide the rest.

Lecture · FR

Landing 04 · South America · benchmark pick from another continent

Brazil

Brésil · Brasil Benchmark
14.24° S, 51.93° W≈8.51 M km²≈213 M peopleChosen for: clean grid + living biosphere
Energy能源 · Énergieon track

Close to 90% of electricity is already renewable — hydro, wind, solar, biomass — plus the world's most established ethanol system. The new problems are rich-country problems: curtailment in the windy northeast, transmission, storage.

Carbon碳 · Carboneon track

Unusually, most emissions come from land use rather than fuel — so falling deforestation moves the national total fast. Amazon clearing dropped sharply across 2023 and 2024 to its lowest level in years.

Water水 · Eauwatch

Holds roughly a tenth of the planet's renewable freshwater, and runs a power system that depends on rainfall. Droughts in the Amazon and Paraná basins are now an energy risk, not only an ecological one.

Waste废弃物 · Déchetsbehind

Sanitation and disposal are the honest gap: tens of millions of people without sewage collection, and a large share of municipal waste still landfilled or dumped.

Materials材料 · Matériauxstrength

Iron ore at scale, and the overwhelming majority of world niobium supply. Clean electricity plus ore is the raw recipe for low-carbon steel and aluminium.

Population人口 · Populationwatch

Fertility has fallen below replacement faster than most projections expected — Brazil will age before it finishes urban infrastructure.

Nature自然 · Naturewatch

The Amazon tipping point is the single most consequential number on this page. Indigenous and protected territories remain the strongest carbon anchor; meanwhile Cerrado clearing has risen while the Amazon's fell.

AI empowerAI 赋能 · IAwatch

A national AI plan and world-class biodiversity and land-use monitoring data. Sovereign compute — powered by an already-clean grid — is the underused advantage.

Agriculture农业 · Agriculturewatch

A global soy, beef, coffee and sugar supplier. The decisive lever is restoring degraded pasture instead of clearing new land — tens of millions of hectares of it.

Industry工业 · Industriewatch

Green hydrogen and low-carbon metals hubs are forming around ports with clean power. Execution, grid connection and offtake are the unresolved parts.

Not on my map before

Because Brazil's emissions are dominated by land use rather than fossil fuel, a good year in the forest does more for its national carbon curve than a decade of power-sector policy would in most countries. — INPE / MapBiomas / Climate Watch

Read · EN

Brazil is the benchmark because it inverts the usual story: the grid is already clean and the hard part is the forest, the sewer and the pasture. It shows the rest of us what comes after decarbonised electricity — and how quickly a biosphere decision can move a national number.

Lecture · FR

2026
The landing year · verify, don't forecast

What to confirm on the ground

  • Kazakhstan: is the renewables auction pipeline actually energising, and is inland gas supply resolved?
  • Germany: heat and transport emissions — the two sectors that decide 2030.
  • United States: interconnection reform in practice, and how much new data-centre load is contracted to clean supply.
  • Brazil: post-COP30 implementation, Cerrado clearing, curtailment in the northeast.
2026 : année de calibrage — vérifier, non prédire.
2026 – 2035
The decade of sequence

On track

  • Solar plus storage cost decline — now the default new build almost everywhere.
  • Brazil's clean electricity; Germany's power sector; the US deployment volume.
  • Falling Amazon deforestation, if enforcement holds.

Behind

  • Industrial heat, freight, steel and cement — technology exists, sequence and price do not.
  • Water governance in every one of the four landings, for different reasons.
  • Circularity: waste and materials are the least measured, least funded systems on this page.
  • Nature restoration and methane — the cheapest tonnes, the slowest institutions.
2035 – 2050
What becomes the binding constraint

Working hypotheses

  • Grids and storage become the new hydraulics of the economy — the thing everything else queues for.
  • Water, not carbon, becomes the limiting factor for industry, agriculture and compute in dry regions.
  • Materials circularity decides whether the transition can be repeated — a second build-out cannot be mined the same way.
  • Population inversion arrives in Germany, Brazil, China and later Kazakhstan: fewer hands for more infrastructure.
  • AI stops being a tool and becomes an energy actor — with a load curve, a water footprint and a siting politics.
