Une seule Terre, quatre atterrissages

ENThe Earth is a living system, not a scoreboard. This station lands on four countries — Morocco, Canada, China, Chile — reads ten signals in each, then leaves the door open, because next year the reading changes.

How we watch, then land

Méthode  ·
01

Watch

Observer

Start wide: carbon, water, energy, waste, materials, population, nature, AI, agriculture, industry. Ten signals, same ten everywhere, so places become comparable without being ranked.

02

Land

Atterrir

Touch down on one region or country. Ask the plain question first: what is genuinely going well here, and what is quietly going wrong?

03

Deep dive

Plonger

Follow each claim to a public source. Every line below can be opened, checked, disagreed with. That is the whole point of the reference ledger.

04

Land again

Réatterrir

We land more than once. Each visit adds nodes and edges to a living knowledge graph, linked back to the real world — a benchmark that is really a calibration.

This is not an investment report, not a score, not a ranking. No country here is “winning”. The only verdicts used are: on track, worth watching, behind.

MA · Maroc

ENA country building a solar and wind machine faster than it can find water. Noor Ouarzazate and the Atlantic wind coast are real; so are six consecutive dry years and less than 650 m³ of water per person per year. Desalination has stopped being a pilot and become infrastructure.

2026Near field · 近场 · proche

Desalination and drip irrigation race the drought; the 52%-renewable-capacity-by-2030 pathway needs grid and storage build, not more announcements.

2026–2035Mid · 中程 · moyen

Green hydrogen and ammonia (Offre Maroc) plus phosphate decarbonisation could make Morocco an exporter of clean molecules — if water and transmission arrive first.

2035–2050Long · 远场 · long

Either a solar-industrial corridor between Africa and Europe, or a water-constrained economy importing its own food. The variable is water, not sunlight.

CarbonWatch
碳 · carbone

NDC pledges 45.5% below business-as-usual by 2030, yet coal still anchors most generation.

WaterBehind
水 · eau

Structural scarcity: reservoir levels low after successive dry years; supply now leans on the sea.

EnergyOn track
能源 · énergie

CSP, PV and wind together push renewables toward the majority of installed capacity.

WasteBehind
废弃物 · déchets

Urban collection is near-universal; sorting, recycling and organics recovery stay marginal.

MaterialsOn track
材料 · matériaux

Holds the world's largest phosphate rock reserves; OCP is electrifying and re-watering the whole chain.

PopulationWatch
人口 · population

~37 million, fertility already near or below replacement — ageing arrives before high income.

NatureWatch
自然 · nature

Argan and cedar under heat and drought stress; Atlas snowpack shrinking, feeding fewer rivers.

AIWatch

Digital strategy and engineering talent are strong; domestic compute and data capacity are thin.

AgricultureBehind
农业 · agriculture

Rain-fed cereals collapse in dry years; irrigation efficiency improving but demand still outruns supply.

IndustryOn track
工业 · industrie

Africa's leading vehicle exporter, moving into batteries and clean-fuel industry.

Canada

CA · Canada

ENOne of the cleanest electricity systems on Earth attached to one of the largest oil exports on Earth. The hardest number in Canada is no longer megawatts — it is the boreal forest, which in record fire years has been handing carbon back to the atmosphere.

2026Near field · 近场 · proche

The 2030 target (40–45% below 2005) is out of reach on current policy; industrial carbon pricing and methane rules now carry most of the load.

2026–2035Mid · 中程 · moyen

Clean Electricity Regulations aim at a near-net-zero grid by 2035 while demand from heat pumps, EVs and data centres climbs. Transmission is the bottleneck.

2035–2050Long · 远场 · long

Net-zero by 2050 depends on two things outside the energy ministry: what oil demand does abroad, and whether the boreal forest stops burning at this scale.

CarbonBehind
碳 · carbone

Emissions have fallen only modestly from 2005; the consumer fuel charge was removed in 2025.

WaterOn track
水 · eau

Holds a fifth of the world's surface freshwater — abundance is real, governance is fragmented.

EnergyWatch
能源 · énergie

Over 80% non-emitting electricity, hydro-led — alongside record crude production.

WasteBehind
废弃物 · déchets

Among the highest municipal waste per person in the OECD; plastics reporting only starting.

MaterialsWatch
材料 · matériaux

Critical minerals strategy funded, but mines take a decade or more to open.

PopulationWatch
人口 · population

Past 41 million on immigration-led growth; 2025 intake cuts slow it and reshape housing demand.

NatureBehind
自然 · nature

Record wildfire seasons; evidence that the managed forest can flip from carbon sink to source.

AIOn track

Deep research base plus sovereign compute funding; data-centre load now a grid planning question.

AgricultureWatch
农业 · agriculture

Prairie drought risk rising; the fertilizer-emissions target stays voluntary.

IndustryWatch
工业 · industrie

Battery and EV plants slowed against schedule; the oil & gas emissions cap remains contested.

China

中国 CN · Chine

ENThe build-out has outrun its own targets: 1,200 GW of wind and solar arrived roughly six years early. The question for 2026–2035 is no longer whether clean capacity grows, but whether coal, steel and cement let total emissions come down off the plateau.

2026Near field · 近场 · proche

First real test of a plateau: power-sector CO₂ can fall while demand grows, if new solar and wind outpace load growth month after month.

2026–2035Mid · 中程 · moyen

New 2035 pledge: net greenhouse gases 7–10% below peak, ~3,600 GW of wind and solar, EVs as the mainstream new vehicle. Grid flexibility and the expanded carbon market decide the pace.

2035–2050Long · 远场 · long

Carbon neutrality before 2060 becomes a materials problem — steel, cement, chemicals — while the population keeps shrinking and ageing.

CarbonWatch
碳 · carbone

Emissions look to be flattening; the first absolute reduction target now sits in the 2035 pledge.

WaterWatch
水 · eau

Northern groundwater stress persists; transfers, reuse and efficiency carry the north's growth.

EnergyOn track
能源 · énergie

2030 wind-and-solar goal met about six years early; next target already far higher.

WasteOn track
废弃物 · déchets

Mandatory household sorting across major cities and the world's largest waste-to-energy fleet.

MaterialsBehind
材料 · matériaux

Over half of global steel and cement output; circularity policy is young against that volume.

PopulationBehind
人口 · population

About 1.408 billion and falling for a third straight year; over a fifth of people are 60+.

NatureWatch
自然 · nature

Ecological red lines protect a large share of land; river and wetland recovery is slow but visible.

AIOn track

Frontier-class open-weight models at low cost; data-centre electricity demand rising fast.

AgricultureWatch
农业 · agriculture

Food-security push raises output; soil health and fertilizer intensity remain the cost.

IndustryOn track

Dominant in solar, battery and EV supply chains; heavy industry caps are the 2026 test.

Chile

智利 CL · Chili

ENAtacama sunlight is so abundant that Chile's bottleneck is wires, not generation — solar is curtailed while the grid waits for the Kimal–Lo Aguirre line. Copper and lithium make Chile a supplier to everyone else's transition; water decides how much of it can happen.

2026Near field · 近场 · proche

Storage and transmission are the whole agenda: batteries paired with desert solar to cut curtailment and evening gas use.

2026–2035Mid · 中程 · moyen

Coal exit by 2040 with the option to move earlier; lithium restructured under the national strategy; green hydrogen in Magallanes tests whether wind can become fuel.

2035–2050Long · 远场 · long

Carbon neutrality by 2050 is written into law. The open question is whether basins, glaciers and communities can supply mining, farming and cities at once.

CarbonOn track
碳 · carbone

Framework Climate Change Law makes 2050 neutrality a legal duty, with coal retirement scheduled.

WaterBehind
水 · eau

A megadrought over a decade long; Santiago holds rationing plans, mining shifts to desalinated seawater.

EnergyOn track
能源 · énergie

Solar and wind now supply a third or more of generation; curtailment, not resource, is the limit.

WasteBehind
废弃物 · déchets

Extended producer responsibility law ramping up from a low recycling base.

MaterialsOn track
材料 · matériaux

Roughly a quarter of world copper and second in lithium; strategy now steers both.

PopulationBehind

Read across the four

What is working

  • Electricity is the solved partNew solar and wind are being built faster than plans assumed in all four countries — China met a 2030 target years early, Chile's limit is transmission, Morocco's is water, Canada's grid is already mostly non-emitting.
  • Clean power has become industrial policyBatteries, phosphates, copper, lithium, vehicles: each country is trying to sell the transition, not only buy it.
  • Legal anchors are holdingChile's framework climate law, Canada's electricity regulations, China's absolute 2035 pledge — targets have moved from speeches into statute.
  • Protection at scalePatagonian parks, large marine reserves, ecological red lines: conservation is now measured in millions of hectares.

What is behind

  • Water, everywhere, firstMorocco's scarcity, Chile's megadrought, north China's aquifers. Water — not sunlight or capital — is the binding constraint on the 2026–2035 decade.
  • Materials and wasteSteel, cement and municipal waste barely move in any of the four. Circularity policy is a decade behind energy policy.
  • Land carbon is unreliableRecord fire years can undo a national mitigation plan. Sinks must now be watched as closely as smokestacks.
  • Demography is the quiet variableFalling fertility in China, Chile and Morocco reshapes labour, cities and demand long before 2050 arrives.
  • AI cuts both waysIt sharpens grids, forecasts and monitoring — while adding load and water demand exactly where both are scarce.

Landing 02 — candidates open for calibration

One gap to keep in view: no small-island or Arctic landing yet. A Pacific island state or a circumpolar region would be small in population and decisive in signal — worth adding as a fifth stop.
