It is an earth-watching method: land wide on a region, then dive deep into the data behind it, always with the source in hand — and then come back and land again. Four places open the map. LANDING 01 · WEST AFRICA

Nigeria 尼日利亚 Nigéria

The world's third-largest population by 2050 — meeting the world's largest electricity gap.

Roughly 230 million people today, a median age around 18, and a UN projection near 375 million by 2050. Nigeria is not a country that will be electrified by one big plant; it is being electrified sideways — mini-grids, rooftop and pay-as-you-go solar, and the 2023 Electricity Act pushing markets down to the states. Meanwhile the national grid still dispatches only a few gigawatts, gas is flared at the wellhead, and the fastest-moving numbers are demographic.

  • Domestic refining and industrial capacity reshaping trade flows and fuel logistics.
  • A young digital workforce: fintech-trained engineers, data-centre build-out, a national AI strategy in motion.

  • Access: tens of millions still unserved — the largest absolute electricity gap of any country.
  • Grid reliability and transmission: generation exists on paper more than on wires.
  • Gas flaring and methane — a fast, cheap climate win still not fully banked.
  • Water and sanitation services, urban waste and plastics in Lagos-scale cities.
  • Farm yields, land degradation and the shrinking Lake Chad basin; deforestation among the fastest measured.

State-level electricity markets begin to differentiate; distributed-solar programmes and metering reform are the year's real test.

2026 → 2035

Whether access growth outpaces population growth. Flare-out delivery. Agriculture productivity as the employment question.

2035 → 2050

An extra ~140 million people. Urban water, food imports and coastal Niger Delta risk become the defining constraints.

LANDING 02 · SOUTH ASIA

India 印度 Inde

The fastest addition of clean power in human history — running beside the fastest addition of demand.

The world's most populous country, around 1.45 billion, with fertility now near or below replacement — so the population question is quietly turning from growth to ageing and urbanisation. India hit its 50%-non-fossil installed-capacity milestone early and is pushing toward 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, with net zero declared for 2070. But coal still carries most of the generated electricity, groundwater is being drawn down in the north-west, and steel and cement are only beginning their hard-to-abate turn.

世界人口第一大国,约 14.5 亿,生育率已接近或低于更替水平——人口议题正从"增长"悄悄转向"老龄化与城镇化"。印度提前实现装机中非化石能源占比 50% 的目标,正朝 2030 年 500 GW 非化石装机推进,并宣布 2070 年净零。但发电量仍以煤为主,西北部地下水持续超采,钢铁与水泥的深度减排才刚刚开始。

  • Coal generation still expanding in absolute terms; storage and transmission are the bottleneck, not panels.
  • Groundwater depletion in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan — the most serious slow-moving risk on the page.
  • Air quality and crop-residue burning; municipal waste and plastics collection quality.
  • Steel, cement and fertiliser: growing volumes with limited low-carbon substitution so far.
  • Agricultural water and power pricing — the incentive knot underneath both energy and water.

Carbon market compliance begins; storage tenders and transmission corridors decide whether renewables actually displace coal.

2026 → 2035

Peak-coal question answered. 2035 NDC delivery. Groundwater governance becomes a food-security question.

2035 → 2050

Urban India of ~600 million+; cooling demand, water reuse and green materials define the emissions curve.

LANDING 03 · EAST ASIA

South Korea 韩国 Corée du Sud

A manufacturing superpower where the bottleneck is no longer the factory — it is the grid, and the birth rate.

Net zero written into law for 2050, a 2030 target of −40% against 2018, and Asia's first nationwide emissions trading system running since 2015. Korea also runs one of the world's best waste systems — volume-based household charging, near-universal food-waste separation. And yet renewables are a small share of its electricity by OECD standards, grid capacity in the south-west limits the solar already built, and the fertility rate — the lowest in the world — has turned population into a shrinking variable.

2050 碳中和已入法,2030 年目标为相对 2018 年减排 40%,全国碳排放交易体系自 2015 年运行,为亚洲首个。韩国的废弃物体系也位居世界前列——垃圾计量收费、食物垃圾几乎全量分类回收。但按 OECD 标准,可再生能源在其发电结构中占比仍低,西南部电网容量限制了已建光伏;而全球最低的生育率,让人口成为一个"收缩变量"。

  • Battery and hydrogen supply chains as an export of the transition itself, not only a domestic fix.
Behind 落后
  • Renewable share of generation lags most advanced economies; permitting and land constraints bite.
  • Grid and curtailment: solar built in Honam without wires to move it is capital left idle.
  • Coal and LNG still structurally embedded in the power mix.
  • Demography: fertility around 0.7–0.8, a population already past its peak, ageing farm and factory workforce.
  • Food self-sufficiency and agricultural labour renewal.

AI framework law enforcement begins; grid investment decisions and the next K-ETS allocation round set the decade's slope.

2026 → 2035

Can renewables plus nuclear crowd out coal fast enough for the 2035 NDC? Green steel and hydrogen leave the pilot stage.

2035 → 2050

A markedly smaller, older population reshapes energy demand, cities and land use — decarbonisation with a shrinking base.

LANDING 04 · CENTRAL AFRICA

DR Congo 刚果(金) RD Congo

The second lung of the planet and the mineral floor of the energy transition — with almost none of the electricity.

DR Congo holds the largest share of the Congo Basin rainforest and the world's biggest tropical peatland complex in the Cuvette Centrale — a carbon store measured in tens of gigatonnes. It supplies the majority of the world's cobalt. And roughly one person in five has electricity, while the Inga site on the Congo River represents tens of gigawatts of unbuilt hydropower. Primary forest loss is now among the highest on earth, driven largely by charcoal and smallholder clearing — energy poverty and deforestation are the same problem wearing two names.

刚果(金)拥有刚果盆地雨林的最大份额,以及中央盆地(Cuvette Centrale)全球最大的热带泥炭地——碳储量以数十亿吨计。它供应全球大部分钴。而全国仅约五分之一人口有电,刚果河上的英加(Inga)坝址代表着数十吉瓦尚未建成的水电。原始林损失已位居全球前列,主因是木炭与小农清林——能源贫困与森林损失,其实是同一个问题的两个名字。

La RDC détient la plus grande part de la forêt du bassin du Congo et la plus vaste tourbière tropicale du monde, dans la Cuvette Centrale — un stock de carbone de dizaines de gigatonnes. Elle fournit la majorité du cobalt mondial. Et environ une personne sur cinq a l'électricité, alors que le site d'Inga représente des dizaines de gigawatts d'hydroélectricité non construite.

  • Still a net carbon sink at national scale — one of very few large countries where that is true.
  • Peatland science and satellite monitoring now good enough to make the carbon store visible and defendable.
  • International forest partnerships (CAFI) and community forestry concessions creating a legal route for local stewardship.
  • Critical-mineral formalisation and traceability efforts in the cobalt and copper supply chain.

  • Mineral value capture: pressure to move beyond raw export toward local processing.
  • Remote-sensing accountability — deforestation and mining alerts arriving in near-real time.
  • Off-grid solar and clean-cooking programmes as the only realistic near-term access lever.
Behind 落后
  • Electricity access around a fifth of the population; Inga remains potential, not power.
  • Primary forest loss rising; oil and gas blocks overlapping peatlands are a systemic risk to the sink.
  • Water abundance versus water service: enormous resources, low safely-managed coverage.
  • Artisanal mining conditions, child labour, and conflict in the east distorting everything measured.
  • Agriculture: vast arable land, some of the lowest yields — and a large food import bill.
  • Data and statistical capacity — which is exactly why earth observation carries the load here.

Decisions on hydrocarbon blocks over peat, and on forest concession governance, are the highest-leverage climate choices of the year.

2026 → 2035

Population toward ~150 million. Access, clean cooking and mineral processing decide whether growth eats the forest.

2035 → 2050

Possibly ~200 million people. The Congo Basin either holds as a global sink, or becomes a source — a planetary-scale hinge.
