AnticipationWeather you can watch coming

From high up, a storm arrives slowly and in full. The west edge of the city goes soft, then indistinct, then gone, and the line keeps moving toward you at the speed of a car on a country road.

There is a particular dread in that. Nothing is happening to you yet. The windows are quiet. Below, traffic keeps its rhythm along the avenues and the lights of downtown stay on in their small cluster. You can hold the whole system in one frame — the anvil, the ragged underside, the pale wall of rain that hasn't reached anyone you know. It is somebody else's weather, briefly, and you watch it the way you'd watch a tide come in.

Then the light changes. Not dark, exactly. Wrong.

ArrivalThe shelf cloud takes the skyline

It stops being far away all at once. The leading edge crosses midtown as a single level shelf — a ceiling more than a cloud — and downtown sits under it looking suddenly small, lit, and temporary. In front of the towers the canopy has gone almost black, all those thousands of trees dropped into shadow while the horizon behind is still bright.

Environment Canada had named the tornado risk out loud in the watch, and later called the system extreme. Red tornado warnings went up across southwestern Ontario. Mayor Olivia Chow activated the city's emergency operations centre. Streets flooded, trees came down, and more than sixty-five thousand customers lost power. In Toronto itself, no tornado was ever confirmed.

ImmersionAnd then you are inside it

The view you were so proud of collapses to about two hundred metres. Rain first, then hail against the glass with a sound like gravel thrown by hand. The towers dissolve, come back for a second as a grey suggestion, and go again. Whatever the shape of the storm was, you can't see it any more. You are in the part of it that has no shape.

The turn

Green was a real warning. Just not the one we heard.

Everyone on that side of the building said the same thing at the same time: the sky is green. And then, because the clouds along the leading edge seemed to churn and turn over on themselves, everyone reached the same conclusion. Tornado. It is an entirely reasonable leap. It is also the wrong one, and it is worth being gentle about why.

Green light in a storm is not a trick of the eye and not an illusion. Spectrophotometers pointed at these skies have measured it: the light really is green. It happens when a cloud is extraordinarily deep and stuffed with liquid water and ice. All that water scatters away the blue, and the low reddish light of a late-afternoon sun comes through the bottom of the column — red-tinted light through a blue-scattering medium reads, to the eye and the instrument alike, as green.

So green tells you something true and useful: this cloud is enormous, top to bottom, and it is carrying an extraordinary load. What it does not tell you is that anything inside it is rotating. Bohren and Fraser, writing in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society in 1993, found no link between a green sky and the likelihood of a tornado or of large hail. And that swirling along the leading edge? Almost always scud — ragged low cloud shredded and lifted by the gust front, moving fast and looking, from a window fifty floors up, exactly like something turning.

The sky told the truth about depth. We promoted it into a claim about rotation.

What it actually licenses

A cloud deck thick enough to scatter every wavelength about equally. It tells you the sun is thoroughly blocked. It does not rank the storm.

What folklore claims

That flat grey means it will blow over. Plenty of damaging storms arrive looking utterly ordinary.

Low sun, reddened by a long path through the atmosphere, lighting cloud from underneath. Mostly a statement about the time of day and the angle of the light.

That a yellow sky means a tornado. It is late-afternoon geometry far more often than it is anything else.

An extraordinarily deep cloud carrying an enormous load of liquid water and ice — the conditions large hail is built in. Measured, not imagined: the light is genuinely green.

That green means a tornado. Bohren & Fraser (1993) found no link between green sky and tornado or large-hail likelihood. Green speaks to depth. It says nothing at all about rotation.

What it actually licenses

Almost no light getting through — great depth plus a hard edge overhead, often the underside of a shelf cloud arriving. Read it as: it is here now.

What folklore claims

That black is the worst of it directly above you. The base of a gust front is dark by geometry, not by intent — and the strongest wind often arrives with it, not after.

What to do: decide now where you would shelter, bring in anything loose, charge the phone and leave alerts switched on. A watch is time you are being given.

It is happening. A storm producing damaging wind, hail or torrential rain is occurring or imminent.

What to do: go inside and stay away from windows. Don't start a drive. Hail this size breaks glass and wind gusts over 110 km/h bring trees down on the roads you'd be using.

Immediate danger to life. Take cover now — a basement, or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.

What to do: move, then ask questions. On 2 September this was the level that reached Toronto phones as a destructive-storm alert, while red tornado warnings were flying in southwestern Ontario.

By dusk the light was ordinary again, the way it always is afterwards — washed, low, almost apologetic. The city came back piece by piece out of the grey. Sixty-five thousand homes were still dark. The sky had told us the truth the whole time, in a colour, and we had simply asked it a question it was never able to answer.
