Aluminium is the material we ask to be light, endless and cheap all at once. Making it releases roughly 1.1 billion tonnes of CO₂e a year — about 2% of everything humanity emits. This page is not an investment report. It is a benchmark: what is genuinely on track to 2035 and 2050, what is quietly off track, and where capital is actually earning its return.

Aluminium demand is projected to grow around 80% by 2050 — EV bodies, transmission conductors, solar frames, packaging, buildings. It is the enabler metal of the energy transition, which means its footprint compounds into everyone else's. Decarbonising aluminium is not one sector's housekeeping; it is a multiplier on the entire clean-tech supply chain.

  • Power

    Move smelting from ~30% to 50%+ low-carbon electricity. Long-tenor firmed PPAs, hydro, nuclear, and round-the-clock renewables. Retrofit pot lines for ±20% load modulation so a smelter becomes a grid asset instead of a grid problem.电解用电的低碳比例从约 30% 提升至 50% 以上;长期“可调度”绿电协议;电解槽负荷可调 ±20%,让电解厂成为电网资产而非负担。

  • Coal

    No new unabated coal-fired smelting. Anywhere. The coal-powered fleet built between 2005 and 2015 is the sector's hardest asset to move — repower it or plan its retirement now, because a smelter built today runs to 2065.全球不再新建无减排措施的燃煤电解产能;2005–2015 年建成的燃煤机组必须换电源或立刻规划退役——今天新建的电解厂要运行到 2065 年。

  • Refining

  • Process

    Kill the PFCs. Perfluorocarbons from anode effects are thousands of times more potent than CO₂ and are eliminated by better cell control — the cheapest tonne of abatement in the entire industry.消除阳极效应产生的全氟化碳:其温室效应是 CO₂ 的数千倍,仅靠更好的槽控就能消除,是全行业最便宜的减排。

  • Circular

  • Market

    Build the plumbing that pays for the rest. No power purchase agreement can remove the carbon anode. Only new chemistry can.

  • Anode

    Inert anodes at commercial fleet scale. ELYSIS (Rio Tinto + Alcoa) and peers replace the consumable carbon anode with a non-consumable one: the cell emits oxygen instead of CO₂, removing ~1.5 t CO₂ per tonne of metal.惰性阳极实现商业化规模:以不消耗的阳极取代碳阳极,电解槽排出氧气而非 CO₂,每吨铝减少约 1.5 吨直接排放。

  • H₂

  • Loop

  • Residue

  • Residual

The 45 Mt capacity ceiling holds. Millions of tonnes have relocated from coal provinces to Yunnan hydropower — the largest single capital reallocation the sector has ever made. Aluminium smelting is now inside the national ETS, and recycled aluminium is being scaled as policy, not sentiment.

EGA has sold solar-powered aluminium since 2021, drawn from Dubai's large-scale solar park; Ma'aden continues to expand in Saudi Arabia. Export-oriented and therefore directly CBAM-exposed — which makes low-carbon credentials a commercial asset, not a report chapter.

Fastest demand growth

India

Around 20 t CO₂e per tonne on captive coal — among the highest intensities in the world, attached to the fastest-growing demand. Round-the-clock renewable PPAs and pumped storage are the entire game. A domestic carbon market (CCTS) begins its compliance phase this decade.

A deliberate omission. Published estimates of the sector's total capital need to 2050 range from roughly US$0.5 to 1.5 trillion and are not comparable — they differ on whether the power system sits inside the boundary. The absence of one agreed figure is itself a call-out, not a detail.
