A week in the life

I opened my laptop
and found a philosopher.

It was just another morning on the Surface Pro — tab after tab, the usual hum of things to do. Then there it was: a seal, lying flat on a grey coastal road, flipper resting on its plump belly, eyes half-closed in the smuggest expression ever captured by a lens. The animal looked like it had solved something the rest of us hadn't.

This is my annual leave. Seven days. No agenda except a POP Art book dog-eared on the nightstand, a coffee shop with friends who talk too slowly about good things, and a blank page that might become writing or might stay blank. Both are fine.

Andy Warhol said fame lasts fifteen minutes. A perfect nap lasts the whole afternoon. I know which one I'm choosing this week.

The Harbour
Seal

This round, whiskered philosopher is almost certainly a harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) — one of the most widespread pinnipeds on Earth, found along the temperate and Arctic coastlines of the North Atlantic and North Pacific. They haul out onto beaches, rocks, and the occasional road to rest, thermoregulate, and, apparently, contemplate existence.

That "banana pose" — belly down, head and tail both raised, eyes squeezed shut — is classic seal bliss. They can sleep like this for hours. No deadlines. No notifications. The overcast sky in the background places this scene somewhere in Northern Europe — perhaps the Netherlands, Denmark, or Scotland.

The world can be quiet, funding, colorful with fun — you just have to stop scrolling long enough to see it.
