Ocean — the shock absorber

Since 1970, the ocean has absorbed roughly 90% of the extra heat humans added to the planet. It has been carrying us the whole time, and it is getting tired.

What is good
Phytoplankton make about every second breath you take. Around 3.3 billion people get a fifth of their animal protein from the sea.

The ocean economy runs at about US$1.5 trillion a year, heading for $3 trillion by 2030 (OECD). Every $1 in ocean restoration returns about $10 (Ocean Panel).

The 30x30 target: protect 30% of the ocean. Today it is roughly 8%, with under 3% fully protected.

2040

Without change, plastic entering the ocean could nearly triple to about 29 million tonnes a year.

2050

Under high emissions, tropical fisheries revenue could fall by up to 20% — hitting the poorest coasts hardest.

Forest — a weather machine

A forest is not trees. The Amazon exhales around 20 billion tonnes of water a day — flying rivers that water farms 2,000 km away.

What is good
The world's forests absorb a net 7.6 billion tonnes of CO₂ a year — twice what they emit. 1.6 billion people live from them.
Risk level · when
●●●●○ HIGH — 3.7 million hectares of tropical primary forest lost in 2023, about ten football pitches a minute. The Amazon tipping point sits at 20–25% clearance; we are near 17–20%.
Money talk
Nature-positive forest and land use is a $3.6 trillion business opportunity by 2030; restoring 350 million hectares could deliver about $9 trillion in net benefits.

145 countries pledged to halt and reverse deforestation. Progress is running roughly 45% behind track.

2040

South-eastern Amazonia, with its longer dry season, has already flipped from carbon sink to carbon source. That line is moving.

2050

A protected forest is one of the cheapest air conditioners this century has. Keeping one always costs less than rebuilding one.

Wetland — kidneys and carbon vault

Peatlands cover 3% of land and store twice the carbon of all the world's forests. Wetlands filter your water and stop storms at the same time.

What is good
One hectare of mangrove can hold around 1,000 tonnes of carbon and blunt a storm surge. Mangroves prevent over $65 billion of flood damage a year and shelter 15 million people.

●●●●● VERY HIGH — 35% of wetlands have vanished since 1970, disappearing three times faster than forests. It is the fastest loss, and the least watched.
Money talk
More than half of global GDP — about US$44 trillion — is moderately or highly dependent on nature. Wetlands are the cheapest flood defence on that invoice.
2030

Global target: restore 30% of degraded ecosystems. Wetlands give the fastest return per hectare.

2040

A drained peatland leaks carbon for decades. Rewet it, and the leak stops in the same year.

2050

Sea level up 0.15–0.3 m. Coastal wetlands drown unless they can walk inland — that space has to be left now.

River — the one from your childhood

You probably have one childhood memory that is really a river memory. Fresh water covers under 1% of Earth's surface and holds 10% of all known species.

What is good
Rivers irrigate about 40% of the world's food. Every $1 spent on water and sanitation returns roughly $4.3 in health.

●●●●○ HIGH — monitored freshwater megafauna populations are down 84% since 1970. 2.2 billion people still lack safely managed drinking water. SDG 6 needs to move six times faster.
Money talk
Companies report over $390 billion of water risk, while the cost of acting on it is roughly one fifth of that. Water is the most underpriced asset you drink.

Global water demand runs about 40% above sustainable supply if we keep using it the way we do.

2040

City water collides head-on with farming and energy. Whoever negotiates first stays safe first.

2050

Up to 5 billion people could face water shortage for at least one month a year.

Mountain — the water tower

The glaciers and snowpack of the Hindu Kush Himalaya feed 240 million mountain people and 1.65 billion downstream. Your tap may begin in ice you will never see.

What is good
Mountains are about a quarter of the land and supply over half the world's fresh water, plus an outsized share of its species and its languages.
Risk level · when
●●●●● VERY HIGH — 2023 was the worst year for glacier loss in the 50-year record. Under high emissions, glacier volume could fall around 80% this century, and glacial lake outburst floods are a present-tense risk.
Money talk
At 2°C of warming, 53% of European ski resorts face very high snow-scarcity risk. Mountain tourism, hydropower and irrigation all sit on the same invoice.
2030

Many basins hit "peak water" from melt — after that, there is simply less every year.

2040

Low-altitude ski seasons shorten. Mountain economies need a second leg to stand on.

2050

Downstream cities must rewrite their water plans now, for a future with less ice.

Campus — a small city with a metabolism

Your campus breathes every day: energy, food, water, waste, travel. It is the first system you can actually put your hands on.

What is good
Over a thousand universities have signed climate commitments, and campus data is usually public — you can simply ask for the utility bills.
Risk level · when
●●●○○ MEDIUM-HIGH — buildings are 34% of global energy use and 37% of energy-related CO₂. On campus, the biggest single load is usually HVAC or the labs.
Money talk
A typical efficiency retrofit cuts campus energy bills by 20–30%. Turning one −80°C freezer up to −70°C saves about 30% of its power, and the samples stay fine.

Many universities set net zero for this year — and you are the intake that gets there.

2040

The building going up today is still here in 2040. Its design writes twenty years of bills.

2050

Your degree will not list emissions. The skills you leave with will decide someone else's.

One tree — the smallest machine

One mature street tree can move up to 400 litres of water on a hot day — cooling like several air conditioners, on no electricity at all.

What is good
Urban canopy can drop peak temperature by 1–5°C. Raising European city canopy to 30% could prevent about a third of heat-related deaths.

●●●○○ RISING — a tree's danger years are its first three summers. Most new trees die of nobody watering them, not of climate.
Money talk
New York's street tree census put the return at about $5.60 for every $1 spent, through cooling, stormwater, property value and health.

Three everyday buttons that move the whole system — and the only three you press every single day.

Plate
Food systems are about a third of global greenhouse gases. In 2022 the world wasted 1.05 billion tonnes of food, 60% of it in households. As a country, food waste would be the third-largest emitter.
Trip
Aviation is about 2.5% of global CO₂ but around 4% of warming. One London↔New York round trip in economy is roughly 1 tonne of CO₂ per passenger — a whole year's footprint for some countries.

●●●●○ HIGH — 430 million tonnes of plastic a year, only about 9% actually recycled. The cups from a three-hour party can outlive you by 400 years.

SDG 12.3: halve food waste. Cutting it returns about $14 for every $1 invested.

Everything is fastened to something else. Open a chain and watch it travel from your hand to the world and back into your pocket.

One party cup, and how it got into your dinner

In 2022, researchers detected microplastics in human blood for the first time. This is not a scare story, it is a loop: what you throw away is looking for the way back. The world makes 430 million tonnes of plastic a year and truly recycles about 9%.

Loop move: a cup library — borrowable hard cups — takes a 300-person party from 900 single-use cups to zero. It usually pays for itself in one term.

One beef burrito, and why your coffee got expensive

A beef meal carries well over ten times the emissions of a bean meal with the same protein. Farm expansion drives most deforestation; fewer forests mean weaker flying rivers, and coffee, cocoa and soy all drink that rain. The 2024 cocoa and coffee price spikes are written on this chain.

Loop move: swap one beef meal a week for beans and you cut roughly 0.3 tonnes CO₂e a year — about $65 off the public bill at a $190/tonne social cost of carbon.

This is not "never fly". It is "see the price". About 1% of people cause more than half of aviation emissions. Meanwhile at 2°C, 53% of European ski resorts face very high snow-scarcity risk. The thing you fly to see is partly taken by the flying.

In the UK alone, lithium batteries cause around 1,200 fires a year in the waste system. Demand for critical minerals climbs steeply to 2040 — every gram of cobalt binned has to be dug out of the ground somewhere else.

Six doors usually kept shut

The biggest systems on Earth are mostly invisible. Push one open — each is worth +2 ↻.

DOOR 01The soil door

A teaspoon of healthy soil holds more organisms than there are people on Earth. Research estimates about 59% of all species live in soil — the richest, least-named habitat on the planet.

Thirty centimetres beneath your shoes decides nearly every harvest above them. A third of the world's soil is already degraded.

DOOR 02The plankton door

About half the oxygen you breathe comes from life in the sea too small to see. Prochlorococcus, the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth, was only discovered in 1988.

The machine keeping you alive has been known to science for less than forty years. Consider how many doors are still shut.

DOOR 03The fungi door

Through underground mycorrhizal networks, plants send roughly 13 billion tonnes of CO₂-equivalent into the soil each year — about a third of global fossil fuel emissions.

It is the largest carbon deal on Earth: no contract, no currency, running for 400 million years.

DOOR 04The sand door

Sand is the second most-used resource after water: about 50 billion tonnes a year, enough to build a 27-metre wall around the equator.

And desert sand is too round to make concrete. So we mine rivers and coasts — the exact defences that were protecting the cities.

DOOR 05The night door

Citizen-science observations show the night sky brightening about 9.6% a year. At that rate, a child born under 250 visible stars will see roughly 100 by the age of eighteen.

It is the only pollution you can undo with a switch. It also proves that loss can be quiet enough for nobody to report it.

DOOR 06The seed door

Inside an Arctic mountain, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault keeps more than 1.3 million seed samples at −18°C.

It has been withdrawn from once: a Syrian research centre, displaced by war, in 2015. A few years later they deposited the seeds back. That is a complete loop.

The UK's first UN-recognised Local2030 Hub. It started as breakfast meetings in one room and wove businesses, students and the city into a network.

Why it sticks: the course you are playing was born in a room like that.

Costa Rica

Paying people not to cut

A fuel tax funds payments to farmers who keep forests standing. Cover went from around 26% in 1983 to over 50% today.

Why it sticks: they did not convince everyone to love nature. They gave it a price.

South Korea · Seoul

A highway removed, a stream returned

Cheonggyecheon took down an elevated expressway. The corridor cooled by up to 3.6°C, biodiversity climbed, and the city gained a living room.

Why it sticks: it proved a city decision can be undone.

Japan · Kamikatsu

The town that sorts 45 ways

A mountain village of around 1,500 people separates waste into 45 categories, reuses or recycles about 80%, and runs a free "kuru-kuru" swap shop.

Why it sticks: not technology — neighbours.

China · Saihanba

A forest planted by three generations

933 km²

On a wind-scoured plateau, three generations of foresters grew one of the world's largest planted forests, holding back sand and water for Beijing. UNEP Champions of the Earth, 2017.

Why it sticks: the first generation knew they would never sit in that shade.

China · Yangtze

A ten-year fishing ban

1,249

Since 2021, a ten-year fishing ban on the main Yangtze. The 2022 survey counted 1,249 finless porpoises — the first rise in decades.

Why it sticks: a river can be handed back inside a decade.

Kenya

The Green Belt Movement

51M+

Started by Wangari Maathai, over 51 million trees planted mostly by rural women — bringing income, water and political power with them.

Why it sticks: she turned planting into a form of citizenship.

Netherlands

Room for the River

Instead of ever-higher dykes, more than 30 sites gave water space back: dykes moved inland, floodplains lowered, farms relocated.

Why it sticks: the best dyke-builders on Earth chose to step back.

Palau

A pledge stamped in your passport

80%

Every visitor signs the Palau Pledge, written by the country's children. Its national marine sanctuary makes 80% of its waters no-take.

Why it sticks: they let children write the rule, then stamped it into adults' passports.

Colombia · Medellín

Thirty green corridors

Green corridors along roads and waterways cooled their routes by around 2°C for roughly $16 million, maintained by a crew of local gardeners.

Why it sticks: cooling the city was run as a jobs programme.

Rwanda

Umuganda: the country cleans itself

Plastic bags banned since 2008; on the last Saturday of every month, communities work together for a few hours. Kigali is called one of Africa's cleanest cities.

Why it sticks: sustainability lives in the calendar, not on a poster.

India · Sikkim

The first fully organic state

In 2016 Sikkim became the world's first 100% organic state, with around 66,000 farmers, winning the 2018 Future Policy Award gold.

Why it sticks: they took over a decade, on purpose. Policy is allowed to be patient.

Your hometown taught you first

“In the evening we ran along the riverside, the water went orange, and nobody was wearing a watch.”

Behind everyone who works for Earth there is one very specific memory: a river, a tree, a rainstorm, a grandmother's vegetable patch, the field on the walk home. Data convinces a brain; memory convinces a person. This part has no score ceiling, because it is where every career actually starts.
