01Introduction

Beyond the Gaze

Megumi Tsai — ArtistryDreamz 2026

Beyond the Gaze is a graphite and charcoal artwork that explores the ideas of courage, protection, fearlessness, and vision. The main subject is a girl named Ravenna, surrounded by birds, creating a connection between the human figure and nature. I wanted the birds to have a deeper meaning instead of simply being part of the composition. They represent strength and courage while also acting as guardians for Ravenna.

Courage can come from within.

The title Beyond the Gaze represents the idea of looking beyond what is immediately visible. Ravenna's expression and the birds' eyes encourage the viewer to think about what might exist beyond what we can see. Through this artwork, I wanted to show that courage can come from within and that sometimes having another perspective can help us recognize our own strength.

02Inspiration & Concept

The Meaning Behind the Artwork

Megumi Tsai — ArtistryDreamz 2026

The main inspiration behind this artwork was the idea of having courage even when we cannot see everything clearly. I wanted to create a piece where the viewer could look at the image and discover different meanings instead of understanding everything immediately.

The birds are an important part of this concept. I see them as symbols of fearlessness, strength, and protection. They surround Ravenna almost like guardians watching over her. Their presence makes it seem like she is not alone, and that something is helping her see and understand the world around her.

The birds also represent a second pair of eyes for Ravenna.

They can see from different angles and perspectives, which connects to the title Beyond the Gaze. I wanted this idea to represent looking beyond what is directly in front of us and having the courage to see things from another perspective.

03Materials & Techniques

My Artistic Process

Megumi Tsai — ArtistryDreamz 2026

I created this artwork using graphite pencils and charcoal pencils. I chose these materials because I wanted to create a mostly black-and-white piece with realistic values and strong contrast. I used different shades of graphite and charcoal to build the shadows and highlights throughout the artwork.

I focused especially on the details of the feathers, hair, skin, eyes, and hands. Creating the feathers was one of the more detailed parts because I wanted each bird to have texture and dimension. I also used darker values around certain areas to create depth and make the lighter parts of the artwork stand out.

I worked slowly, building up the values instead of making everything dark at once.

This allowed me to create smoother transitions between the highlights, midtones, and shadows.

04Gold Leaf Technique

Adding Gold to the Artwork

Megumi Tsai — ArtistryDreamz 2026

One of the techniques I experimented with in this artwork was using gold leaf/paper. Since the majority of the artwork is grayscale, I wanted to add a small amount of gold to create contrast and make certain areas stand out.

To apply the gold, I first placed an adhesive solution onto specific areas of the paper. I then carefully placed the gold leaf over the adhesive and pressed it down so that it would stick to the selected areas. I had to be careful with the placement because I wanted the gold to look intentional and precise.

The gold reflects light differently from the graphite and charcoal.

It also gives the piece a more mysterious and symbolic feeling. Instead of using gold everywhere, I kept it limited so that it would stand out against the darker values.

05Symbolism

The Birds as Guardians

Megumi Tsai — ArtistryDreamz 2026

The birds are one of the most meaningful parts of my artwork. I wanted them to symbolize courage, fearlessness, and protection. Their large size and position around Ravenna make them feel almost like guardians.

The bird's eye is especially important because it represents another form of vision. The bird can see things from a different perspective, almost like giving Ravenna another pair of eyes. This connects directly to the meaning behind Beyond the Gaze.

A strength that already exists within her.

The birds can also be seen as representing Ravenna's own courage. Even though they appear outside of her, they can symbolize a strength that already exists within her. The birds surrounding her create the feeling that she is protected while also showing that she has the strength to face what is ahead.

06Composition

How I Created the Composition

Megumi Tsai — ArtistryDreamz 2026

For the composition, I positioned the birds around Ravenna's face so that they would naturally frame her. I wanted the viewer's attention to move between Ravenna's eyes, the birds' eyes, and the gold details.

The overlapping shapes of the birds, hair, hands, and feathers create movement throughout the artwork. I also used the darker values of the birds to contrast with the lighter areas of Ravenna's face. This helps make her face one of the main focal points.

Almost as if the birds are creating a protective space around her.

I wanted the composition to feel somewhat enclosed. This helped reinforce the idea of the birds acting as guardians while also making the artwork feel mysterious.

07Final Outcome & Reflection

How the Artwork Turned Out

Megumi Tsai — ArtistryDreamz 2026

Overall, I am happy with how Beyond the Gaze turned out. I think one of the strongest parts of the artwork is the combination of realistic graphite and charcoal drawing with the gold details. The grayscale values allowed me to focus on realistic textures and expressions, while the gold created contrast and added another layer to the artwork.

I also think the symbolism became stronger as I developed the piece. At first, the birds were simply part of the composition, but as I worked on the artwork, I developed the idea of them being guardians that represent courage and another perspective.

One challenge I faced was creating the detailed textures of the feathers and making the birds look realistic while still keeping the composition balanced. Adding the gold also required precision because I wanted each piece to be placed carefully.

Seeing beyond the surface, and recognizing the strength that may already exist within us.

In the end, I believe the artwork successfully communicates my idea of looking beyond what is immediately visible. The birds represent the courage and protection surrounding Ravenna, while their eyes represent another perspective. Beyond the Gaze is ultimately about seeing beyond the surface and recognizing the strength that may already exist within us.
