Tighten the hand and the rows pull close; the edges draw inward and the cloth narrows, the feather bands return sooner. Ease off and it breathes wider again, rows spaced, strands wandering. Neither is an error. Both are held, permanently, in the shape of the thing.

A join is where one length of fibre ends and another begins, and the work continues across it.
