What Does "High-Impact" Actually Mean?

High-impact work is not simply well-intentioned work. The effective altruism research community defines it through three lenses: scale (how many lives or systems are affected?), neglectedness (how few resources are flowing to this problem?), and tractability (how much does an extra unit of effort move the needle?). Problems scoring high on all three are where transformative impact concentrates.

The Gates Foundation's 2023 Goalkeepers Report found that for every $1 invested in childhood immunisation, society receives roughly $21 in economic returns — a ratio that dwarfs most financial markets. Yet global vaccine funding remains chronically short. This is the geometry of impact: enormous leverage, hidden in plain sight.

The 80,000 Hours Framework: If you work for 80,000 hours over a career, choosing a high-impact path versus a typical one could be the difference between helping dozens of people and helping hundreds of thousands. Research by 80,000 Hours (Oxford) shows career decisions are among the single most leveraged choices a person ever makes — yet most people spend fewer than 20 hours on them in a lifetime.

Most people who want to change the world are held back not by lack of resources or intelligence, but by unexamined assumptions. Research in behavioural economics and developmental psychology consistently shows that how we frame problems — before we solve them — determines more than 60% of the variance in outcomes (McKinsey Global Institute, 2022). Mindset is not soft. It is structural.

Choosing work because it feels heroic or morally visible — not because it moves the dial. Dan Pallotta's research showed that NGOs receiving the most public praise often had the lowest cost-effectiveness ratios.

Humans feel nearly the same emotional pull saving 2,000 birds as 200,000 (Kahneman & Knetsch, 1992). Our intuition is calibrated for small groups — not global scale. Quantification overrides this bug.

Ask: "What changes because I specifically show up?" Marginal thinking reveals leverage. A dollar to a well-funded problem produces marginal impact; the same dollar to a neglected one can be transformative.

Infectious disease remains the world's most efficient killer. COVID-19 cost an estimated $12.5 trillion in lost GDP (IMF, 2021). The Long Game

Small, Sustained Actions That Compound

The logic of compounding applies to human impact as surely as it applies to capital. Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy — known as Dr. V — performed 100,000 eye surgeries in his lifetime. But the Aravind Eye System he designed has since performed over 8 million surgeries on a model that costs $3 per cataract removed (vs $1,650 in the US). His system outlived him by decades and keeps compounding.

Florence Nightingale didn't just nurse soldiers — she invented modern hospital data visualisation, creating the first polar-area chart to force the British government to confront preventable deaths. Her innovation was epistemic: she changed what decision-makers could see. One tool, deployed precisely, shifted state policy and saved hundreds of thousands.

The Multiplier Principle: The most impactful individuals in history were not those who acted most visibly, but those who built systems that acted after them. Jonas Salk did not patent the polio vaccine — he gave it to the world. That single decision multiplied his impact by an estimated 300×. Ask not just "what should I do?" but "what should survive me?"
