The Creator's Two Faces:
Expression & Production in the Age of AI

When output is no longer scarce, what is a creator actually doing? This lecture explores the tension between expresser and producer in the age of AI, and how the irreplaceable "I" re-emerges in the mirror AI holds up.

A contemplative composition visualizing the creator's two faces — the mirror AI holds up, a dual-identity at the threshold of expression and production.

A few years ago, before the LLM boom, the AI art I saw in exhibitions was mostly GAN-based—rough, experimental, full of process, alive in the borderland between geeks and artists. Nobody talked about "AI replacing human creativity" back then. It was simply a medium to play with.

Around the same time, I was stuck in my own paradox: wanting to do everything, finishing nothing. Sound, visuals, writing, code—every "skill" stood as a heavy gate.

For me, AI's arrival wasn't just about getting tasks done—it made multidisciplinary thinking practicable for the first time. I don't need to master every skill; I can be a translator between languages.

When output is no longer scarce, what am I actually doing?

Two people have always lived inside every creator: an inward-facing expresser, an outward-facing producer.

AI didn't create this tension—it just shone a harsh light on a boundary that used to be blurry.

Face A · 表达者

向内

The Inward Expresser

Face B · 生产者

向外

The Outward Producer

Output, iteration, optimization. The one who selects, combines, presents — curator and director at once.

Art is inherently messy—ambiguous, open, warm with body heat. What moves us is often not just the work, but the story and the process behind it.

AI is rational at its core, optimizing—its randomness is controlled, not intuitive.

Ironically, early GAN art felt more artistic—while LLM-era creation grows industrial, pushing process and uncertainty into the corner.

Is art a reproducible product, or an unrepeatable event? A creator's value may lie precisely in the irreplaceable "I" within that event.

Assume AI will translate your ideas ever more precisely—then the question is no longer "can I," but "what do I choose, and how do I present it."

The creator's role is shifting: selecting and combining like a curator, owning atmosphere, pacing, and narrative like a director.

Abilities That Remain Scarce

Definition
Cross-domain Translation
New narratives are born in the gaps between languages — between sound and image, between code and poetry.
Aesthetic Judgment
Knowing what's worth making, and what will resonate — not an optimization target, but an embodied, holistic intuition.
— Closing ·

AI never answered "who am I" for me. It only amplified the question until it could no longer be avoided—

And that, perhaps, is this era's best gift to creators.
