A book that is finished. A notebook that is still growing. What is kept here is not a review — it is what actually remained in her reading.

I always felt he was following his own nature. He never let any Buddhist teaching define him. Siddhartha seems restless, and yet there is a kind of clarity in him, because there is collision, contradiction, and the bitterness and sweetness of different lives actually felt. He is living to the full — and still not clinging, not depending.
Following one's nature ≠ carelessness. This is the reader's voice, kept as it is.

The novel lays his life out as a series of departures: the Brahmin household, the ascetics, an encounter with the Buddha, the city with its trade and its love, wealth and its loss, and finally the river and the ferry. He enters each stage completely, and leaves each one.
Knowledge | feeling · craving · clinging
Early Buddhist analysis separates three things ordinary reading tends to fuse: feeling (vedanā — the pleasant, painful or neutral tone of an experience), craving (taṇhā — the pull for it to continue or to stop), and clinging (upādāna — the grip that holds on and calls it "mine"). In dependent origination, feeling conditions craving and craving conditions clinging: linked, but not identical.
So is freedom having fewer experiences — or having them without turning them into "mine"?

You wrote "not clinging" — and you also wrote that he "felt the bitterness and sweetness of different lives". Might those two lines be pointing at the same thing: passing through, without owning?

He walks through asceticism, and through desire too. There is collision, there is contradiction.

In the first half he tries to thin out the senses through fasting, waiting and endurance. Later he reverses direction and gives himself to money, gambling, wine and desire. The novel does not stage this as a simple fall; it reads more like an illness he had to catch once, himself.
Knowledge | the Middle Way
In the first discourse (SN 56.11) the middle way is defined by two extremes it declines: devotion to sensual pleasure on one side, devotion to self-mortification on the other. The Noble Eightfold Path is named as that middle.
Buddhism says: avoid the two extremes. Hesse's Siddhartha seems to need to walk straight through both. Why?

The opening world is a Brahmin household — ritual, offering, recitation. That vocabulary is Vedic and Upaniṣadic, not yet Buddhist. He grows up inside this language, and it is inside this language that he first finds it insufficient.
Knowledge | ātman · brahman · Upaniṣads
Sacrifice, Om, brahman — this vocabulary belongs to a Brahmanical and Upaniṣadic intellectual world. Ātman is often rendered as the innermost self, brahman as ultimate reality; the Upaniṣads treat their relation in several different ways rather than one settled doctrine. Calling this layer simply "Buddhism" loses a real turn in the story.
What if his refusal to be defined starts earlier than we think — with the language of his own house?

He keeps returning to the same problem: what this "I" actually is. First he tries to empty it, later he nearly loses it, and at the river he stops hurrying toward an answer and listens instead.
Knowledge | ātman ↔ non-self
Early Buddhist non-self (anattā / anātman) is not a claim that nothing exists. It works by examining the components of experience one by one and finding none of them fit to be taken as "this is mine, this I am, this is my self". Between that and a lasting ātman there is a genuine tension.
Hesse does not settle this tension doctrinally. He lets a character carry it, and go on living.
