One image of a whole Earth is held together by several acts. No single hand completes it.

Vantage

Apollo 17 was on translunar coast on 7 December 1972. The Sun stood behind the spacecraft, so the full disc was lit: cloud over the Indian and Atlantic oceans, the African continent, the Antarctic ice — all inside one field of view. That geometry was a condition of the trajectory and of the moment the crew turned to look.

Exposure

A Hasselblad 70 mm camera, colour reversal film, one opening of a shutter. Nothing in the frame was joined or assembled. NASA credits the photograph to the Apollo 17 crew collectively — Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans and Harrison Schmitt. Which of the three pressed the shutter is not securely identified, and is not assigned here.

Processing

The exposed film was brought home, processed and catalogued by NASA. Colour, density and the visible frame come from that ground work; the shutter alone did not produce a picture anyone could see.

Orientation

The frame was rotated before publication: as exposed, the Antarctic ice stood toward the top. The familiar orientation is a decision made afterwards, about how the planet should be recognised.

AS17-148-22727 — mission, magazine, frame. Registration is what lets the photograph be requested, reproduced, credited and checked, rather than merely existing.

Assembly, thirty years on

NASA's 2002 Blue Marble was built from months of observations by the MODIS instrument aboard the Terra satellite — land surface, coastal ocean, sea ice and cloud. Earth-observation scientists and data visualizers chose which days gave the clearest view of each part of the planet, resampled those measurements onto one global map, balanced the colour so the seams would not show, and stitched a seamless disc. It looks like a photograph and is not one.

NASA states that the original 1972 Blue Marble inspired later whole-Earth images compiled from satellite data. That is the relation claimed here and nothing wider: satellites were observing Earth before 1972, and the atmosphere, ocean and land sciences have their own long histories.

Blue Marble: Next Generation (2005) is a year of monthly global composites, processed the same way each month so the months can be compared: snow advancing and withdrawing, vegetation greening and browning, sea ice growing and shrinking. The EPIC camera aboard NASA and NOAA's DSCOVR spacecraft observes the sunlit face of Earth from the L1 point, about a million miles out, in ten narrow bands read for ozone, aerosols, cloud height and vegetation. In December 2022 NASA marked “Blue Marble 50 Years Later”, returning to the date and vantage of 7 December 1972.

Reading

A whole Earth that could be seen became a whole Earth that could be measured — and neither version was ever the work of one hand.
