The 30% target
EN — In magnetron sputtering, only a minority of the indium in an ITO target ends up as film on the customer's glass. The remainder is redeposited on shields and masks, cut away as the target is machined, or left in the eroded target body. All of it is high-grade, single-composition, and generated inside a plant that buys targets on a recurring contract. The result is a take-back arrangement that reads more like a lease than like recycling: the refiner supplies the target, the fab returns everything that is not film, and the indium re-enters as new target metal. Metallurgically this secondary indium is indistinguishable from primary — which dismantles the assumption that a high-performance touch sensor cannot contain recycled material. The scale-up lesson is unglamorous and portable: write the return obligation into the supply contract, weigh every stream, and audit the mass balance.
