A Black Stork does not arrive by accident.

It returns because forests remain. Because rivers still flow. Because wetlands still provide refuge.

Earth History of a Black Stork ·

Four Acts

四幕

Act I · 第一幕

Forest Era

The Black Stork belongs to the stork family, sharing a common ancestor with the White Stork. Ancient forests in Europe, continuous wetlands in Asia, and broad rivers and seasonal marshes in Africa together shaped this bird — which, in the end, chose a different path: the White Stork moved close to people. The Black Stork moved away.

Act II ·

The Bird of the Forest

It is not like a crane, a goose, or a swan — it is more like a ghost of the forest. It favours old trees, rivers, canyons, wetlands, quiet places, nesting high above. Which means it never needs only a lake — it needs a whole, unbroken system: a hundred-year-old tree, a healthy river, a fish-bearing wetland, a safe corridor — all present, all at once.

Act III ·

Ice Age Survivor

Across hundreds of thousands of years, glacial and interglacial periods came and went. Forests advanced, then retreated. Wetlands vanished, then returned. Countless species disappeared. The Black Stork survived — because when the world changed, it did not wait. It moved.

Dongting Lake & Maoli Lake

Across the wider Dongting system, Black Storks are most often observed in winter — arriving as northern wetlands freeze, leaving again before spring water levels rise. Whether Maoli Lake has held this same rhythm for decades, or only recently, is a question this station begins to ask — not yet one it can answer.

If Maoli Lake has only recorded the Black Stork's return in the last ten years, the bird arriving today is almost certainly not the individual that may have visited a century ago. What is passed down, then, is not one bird's memory — it is Flyway Memory: young birds learn the route by following adults on their first migration, gradually learning the rivers, the wetlands, the resting places, the wind. Research on Black Storks from Germany shows that age and migratory experience meaningfully shape route choice — older, more experienced birds rely increasingly on what they have already learned.

Perhaps what returns is not a bird at all, but a route that has learned to trust a place — and a place that has learned to keep it safe enough to be trusted.

A Family Memory ·

A Notebook My Father Never Kept

My father was born in the 1950s. Through the 1980s and '90s, his favourite way to spend a weekend was to ride his bicycle for hours to Maoli Lake, fish there all day, and ride home at dusk with two baskets of fish, big and small, hanging from the sides of his bike — the best part of our weekend family table. He liked to go alone. He loved that quiet, unhurried freedom.

This afternoon, over lunch, I showed him a photo of a Black Stork and asked if he'd ever seen a bird like this while fishing. "It's a big bird," I said. He thought for a moment. "I'm not sure," he said. "I don't remember."

It made me smile, a little sadly. If only, back then, he had also kept a small, secret notebook — like a Chinese Walden — recording the date, the weather, the sun, the water level, what bait he used (earthworms from our balcony, or rice bran soaked in wine), and what he saw. He is 76 now, living in the same city as me. Maoli Lake is still his favourite place in the world — even if he can no longer say for certain whether the bird was ever there with him.

We may not know what fished, flew, or nested here fifty years ago. But we can choose, starting now, to remember.
