can become a school.
建て直しの現場では、失われかけた材料の知識が実際に使われ、試され、間違いを直され、次の手へ渡される。図面と古写真は問いを出し、材料が答え、年長の判断が採点し、若い手が答えを書き直す。
On a rebuilding site, endangered material knowledge is actually used, tested, corrected and handed on. Records and old photographs set the question, the material answers, senior judgement marks it, and young hands write the answer again.
首里城は、日本の城のひとつという以上に、琉球王国（1429–1879）の政治・経済・文化の中心であり、沖縄の歴史と文化の象徴です。
Shuri Castle is not simply "a Japanese castle": it was the political, economic and cultural centre of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429–1879), and remains a symbol of Okinawan history and culture.

15 · 首里城Shuri Castle
2019年10月31日の火災は、正殿ほかの建物を奪いました。奪われなかったものは、書かれた記録、撮られた写真、そして手の中に残った作業の順序です。いま首里で起きているのは、その三つを突き合わせて、失われかけた材料の知識をもう一度動くものに戻す作業です。
The fire of 31 October 2019 took the Seiden and other buildings. What it did not take were the written records, the photographs, and the order of operations still held in people's hands. What is happening at Shuri now is the work of setting those three against each other, so that endangered material knowledge moves again.
一枚の瓦は、土と、図と、手と、隣の瓦を同時に憶えている。
One tile remembers, at the same time, the clay, the drawing, the hand, and the tile beside it.
首里城は琉球王国（1429–1879）の政治・経済・文化の中心でした。だから再建は、建物の復元であると同時に、その知識を扱える人を増やす期間でもあります。工事が終われば校舎は消えます。残るのは、そこで身についた判断です。
Shuri Castle was the political, economic and cultural centre of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429–1879). So the rebuilding is also a period in which more people learn to handle that knowledge. When the work ends, the school building disappears; what remains is the judgement formed inside it.
